Heavy-metal compounds

Heavy metal compounds used to treat cancer include cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin (see Table 36-6). These drugs, which contain platinum, are also known as platinum coordination complexes.10,27 Heavy metal drugs act like the alkylating agents that is, they form strong cross-links between and within DNA strands, [Pg.579]

The phthalocyanine molecule is remarkably stable to heat and chemical reagents. The metal-free and heavy metal compounds sublime practically unchanged at 550-580 C. [Pg.312]

A U.S. patent describes the reaction of commercial oleic acid with hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid foUowed by air oxidation using a heavy metal compound and an inorganic bromine or chlorine compound to catalyze the oxidation. ExceUent yields of dibasic acids are obtained (up to 99%) containing up to 72% azelaic acid (55). [Pg.62]

Salt formation. The resin acids have a low acid strength. The pa s (ionization constants) values of resin acids are difficult to obtain, and values of 6.4 and 5.7 have been reported [23] for abietic and dehydroabietic acids, respectively. Resin acids form salts with sodium and aluminium. These salts can be used in detergents because of micelle formation at low concentrations. Other metal salts (resinates) of magnesium, barium, calcium, lead, zinc and cobalt are used in inks and adhesive formulations. These resinates are prepared by precipitation (addition of the heavy metal salt to a solution of sodium resinate) or fusion (rosin is fused with the heavy metal compound). [Pg.602]

This has a strong tendency to form oxygen and the metal by heating, it can prove to be a dangerous oxidant in certain conditions, but can also catalyse some reactions of decomposition, which is a feature shared by most heavy metal compounds. In the presence of very active oxidants, it can form explosive mercury peroxide. [Pg.231]

Ammonia is capable of reacting with some heavy metal compounds (silver, gold, mercury) to produce materials, some of uncertain constitution, which may explode violently when dry. [Pg.1660]

Trickle Hydrodesulfurization A process for removing sulfur-, nitrogen-, and heavy-metal-compounds from petroleum distillates before catalytic cracking. The preheated feed is hydrogenated, without a catalyst, in an adiabatic reactor at 315 to 430°C. Developed by Shell Development Company. As of 1978, 91 units had been installed. [Pg.274]

The initial t for MeHg in plasma is brief (15 min.) while the second half-time is quite long (1.2 days) relative to all other pollutants in this report. The V is greater than that of body water and this is consistent with localization in RBC s, muscle and kidney. The clearance is one-half that of PAH. If other forms of Pt are as difficult to model pharmacokinetically and have the same implications as the results of this model, these heavy metal compounds might be troublesome. The slow removal of cis-Pt from the plasma (3-phase) has been noted previously in dogs and rats (22) it is 17.5 days in the shark. [Pg.256]

Chlorine-containing polymers such as poly(vinyl chloride) PVC undergo an autocatalytic dehydrochlorination reaction under the influence of elevated temperature and UV radiation. Since the HCl originating from the dehydro chlorination of the PVC chains is believed to sustain this autocatalytic process, stabilizers that irreversibly bond HCl can thus inhibit the degradation. Heavy metal compounds such as cadmium stearate or lead stearate are currently used for this purpose. However, alternatives are required due to environmental problems associated with the use of heavy metals. Indeed, the largest current application of LDH materials is in the polymer industry, mainly to stabilize PVC [3,229-232]. [Pg.214]

There are times when two color assays may be required. This can be accomplished by altering the enzyme system used for one of the assays or the chromogen used for one of the assays if the enzymes are not altered. Perhaps the easiest method is to alter the color product of the DAB chromogen for one of the assays. This can be done be adding a heavy metal compound such as cobalt or nickel to the dilute solution (9). The resultant precipitate will be blue to black, not brown. It is helpful in this circumstance to use a Methyl Green counterstain, which will enhance the black precipitate and avoid the confusion of color seen with some other counter stains. [Pg.184]

Organic heavy metal compounds are produced by the chemical industry (e.g. tetraethyl lead was produced and added to petrol as an anti knocking agent for more than 30 years in the UK, until unleaded petrol became available in the mid-1980s). They can also be synthesised in some living organisms (e.g. bacteria). [Pg.47]

Staining techniques employing heavy metal compounds (e.g., uranyl acetate or phosphotungstic acid) as contrast agents have often been used to demonstrate the ) 2005 by CRC Press LLC... [Pg.13]

The BESCORP Soil Washing System (BSWS) is a water-based unit for the volume reduction of coarse/sandy soils contaminated with lead or other heavy metals. It uses a combination of trommel agitation, attrition scrubbing, high-pressure washing, and separation by particle size and density to remove heavy metals and heavy-metal compounds from soil. [Pg.424]

There are a few common and long-known uses of heavy metal compounds which should be mentioned. The barium meal is used in gastrointestinal X-rays. It is administered as barium sulfate, the high electron scattering of barium ions providing X-ray opacity. Mercurial diuretics, derivatives of propan-2-ol, work by inhibition of sulfhydryl enzyme sites. These compounds are now becoming obsolete, however. [Pg.756]

Heavy metal compounds tend to be toxic and require careful handling some of those are compounds of lead, thallium, mercury, and barium. Provide the formulas of these heavy metal bromides, sulfides, nitrides, and carbonates. The more common oxidation numbers of the metals having more than one are Pb2+, T1+, Hg2+. [Pg.158]

Like the Swem oxidation, the Dess-Martin periodinane (DMP) reagent oxidizes primary alcohols to aldehydes and secondary alcohols to ketones without using chromium or other heavy-metal compounds. The reaction with DMP takes place under mild conditions (room temperature, neutral pH) and gives excellent yields. The DMP reagent, which owes its oxidizing ability to a high-valence iodine atom, is a commercially available solid that is easily stored. [Pg.473]

Pb, Hg, As, Cd, Sn, Zn, and Cu are widely used in industry, particularly in metal-working and metal-plating processes, and in products such as batteries, electronic components, certain pesticides, and medicines. Owing to the brilliant colors of certain heavy metal compounds, they are also used in paint pigments, glazes, inks, and dyes. [Pg.171]
