Volume reduction

Incineration may be thought of as the complete destruction of materials by heat to their inert constituents. This material that is being destroyed is the waste product (i.e., the sludge). Sewer sludge as sludge cake normally contains from 55 to 85% moisture. It carmot burn until the moismre content has been reduced to no more than 30%. The purpose of incineration is to reduce the sludge cake to its minimum volume, as sterile ash. There are three objectives incineration must accomplish  [Pg.551]

There are four basic types of incinerators used in wastewater treatment plants. They are the multiple hearth incinerator, the fluid bed incinerator, the electric furnace, and the cyclonic furnace. The chemist may have to do one, or possibly two more volume reductions before all of the excess ammonium chloride is removed (usually just one more). The dependency of liquid volume on pressure may be expressed in terms of the coefficient of compressibility. The coefficient is constant over a wide range of pressures for a particular material, but is different for each substance and for the solid and liquid states of the same material. For liquids, volume decreases linearly with pressure. For gases volume is observed to be inversely proportional to pressure/. Halocarbon systems are almost invariably controlled by mechanical or electronic thermostatic expansion valves, requiring a superheat signal to operate the control. The superheating of the suction gas into the compressor will cause it to expand, resulting in a lower mass flow for a given swept volume.
