Back-up or backing A compressible material used in the bottom of sealant joints to reduce the depth of sealant and to improve its shape factor. The hands should be protected by gloves with a tight-fitting wristband. Breathable canvas or leather is suitable for dry conditions, but, where lime putty or milk of lime is being handled, waterproof gloves should be used. Any exposed parts of the arms, wrists and hands should be protected with barrier cream. 

Hands and feet may need protection from abrasion, temperature extremes, cuts and punctures, impact or skin infection. Gioves or gauntiets provide protection from most industriai processes, but shouid not be worn when operating machinery because they may become entangied in it. Care in seiecting the appropriate protective device is required for exampie, barrier creams provide oniy a iimited protection against infection. 

Personal protective equipment (PPE) can help reduce the frequency and severity of hand and finger injruy. Although fingers are harder to protect, they can be shielded from many common injuries. Personal protection is available in the form of gloves, mitts, finger cots, thimbles, hand pads, sleeves and hand lotions or barrier creams. 

Other types of hand protection you may use on the job site include barrier creams, mitts, finger cots, hand pads, sleeves or forearm cuffs, and thimbles. If you are called upon to use any oHhese, or if you need gloves or aren t sure which type of glove to use, ask your foreman. 

The identification of risk groups for occupational skin diseases depends on skin exposures at the workplace, the individual s specific and nonspecific skin susceptibility, and the quality and use of protective equipment and barrier creams. The daily duration of wet work, working with dry irritants (grinding dusts) or the wearing of occlusive protective gloves for 2 h and more, the necessity and frequent cleaning of the hands (more than 20 times) or the unavoidable direct skin contact to potent sensitizers represent the most relevant burden-associated risk marker. Skin-protective gloves can only rarely be used because they interfere with the work. Barrier creams have little value and may even facilitate penetration of cobalt into the skin (Fischer and Rystedt 1983,1990). An emollient cream after hand cleaning is recommended. 

Protective gloves, especially rubber gloves made of natural rubber latex or synthetic rubber (e.g., neoprene rubber), as well as rubber parts of respiratory masks used with certain industrial solvent-based paints should also be remembered as potential causes of sensitization in painters. Preservatives in barrier creams, hand ointments and hand cleansers are other potential causes of dermatitis (Mathias 1984 Estlander et al. 1994, i996a,b). 

For ultraviolet and infra-red radiation, eye protection in the form of goggles or a visor is most important, particularly when undertaking arc welding or furnace work. Skin protection is also likely to be necessary for the hands, arms and neck in the form of gloves, sleeves and a collar. For construction and other outdoor workers, protection from sunlight is important, particularly for the head and nose. Barrier creams should also be used. 

Other poly(saccharides) find practical applications. For example, konjac and carrageenan have numerous cosmetic and medical uses. Konjac is used in controlled release applications and as a barrier film to protect wounds. Carrageenans are used in dentifrices, hand lotions, shaving creams, shampoos and controlled release systems.i Poly(saccharides) derived from fungi have been shown to possess anti-tumor properties, and some recent research suggests curdlan sulfate may have antiviral activity, including potential anti-AIDS activity. AH solvents which are efficient for cleaning surfaces will also remove the natural body greases from the hands. Whilst direct handling and wiping of components with solvent soaked cloths is to be deprecated, there are occasions when it will be done. Because barrier creams will themselves contaminate the surfaces to be cleaned, the hands are best protected with cheap disposable polyethylene gloves. 

Skin Irritation. Fine broken filaments often irritate the skin, occasionally causing transient itching and rashes. The back of hands and wrists and neck areas tend to be most sensitive. Protective clothing and barrier skin creams help prevent the fiber from reaching the skin and causing discomfort.
