Barrier creams

Specially designed impervious suits, eg. Level A suits, are utili2ed by workers handling some rocket fuels and other highly ha2ardous compounds (see Explosives and propellants). Barrier creams are much less effective than gloves for preventing skin contact. 

The fluids have also found a number of uses in medicine. Barrier creams based on silicone fluids have been found to be particularly useful against the cutting oils in metal machinery processes which are common industrial irritants. The serious and often fatal frothy bloat suffered by ruminants can be countered by the use of small quantities of silicone fluid acting as an antifoam. 

Supply of an appropriate barrier cream (i.e. for wet or dry work) and afterwork cream. Adequate showering/bathing facilities.

Do not use paraffin (kerosene), petrol (gasoline), chlorinated hydrocarbons or proprietary solvents to cleanse skin Use barrier cream before work and after washing hands (different barrier creams protect against different oils - a cream intended for soluble oil does not protect against straight oils)... 

Barrier creams are applied before work to provide a protective film. A different type of cream, cleansing cream, is applied after work to aid dirt removal and to condition skin with humectant. 

There is a limit to die quantity of chemical a barrier cream can repel.

Machine operators working with emulsions can become susceptible to skin infections because of the combination of the de-fatting effect of soluble-oil emulsifiers and the abrasive action of metallic scarf, but bacteria in cutting fluids are seldom the source of such infections. High standards of personal hygiene and the use of barrier creams should prevent such problems. A more difficult situation arises when a soluble-oil emulsion becomes infected with bacteria capable of utilizing the emulsifier and mineral-oil components in the system. Even in clean conditions, untreated soluble-oil emulsions and solutions cannot remain completely sterile for any length of time.

Napkin dermatitis can be soothed and prevented with the use of barrier creams and ointments such as zinc and castor oil, Vasogen, Sudocrem and Drapolene. Photosensitivity Amiodarone has induced photosensitization in about 10% of patients. During long-term treatment, a blue-gray discoloration of the exposed skin may occur some protection may be afforded by sun barrier creams or protective clothing. This is slowly and occasionally incompletely reversible on discontinuation of drug.
