Custom decorative sound-absorbing treatments for wall surfaces are frequentiy used in auditoriums and theaters, especially for control of echoes from rear walls. Typical treatments consist of prefabricated or custom-built wood grilles over fiber glass or mineral wool blankets or batts.

Figure 6-4 illustrates the personal emissions of a typical U.S. family. 

In Western Europe the largest user is the vehicle construction industry where ABS has been used for fascia panels, door covers, door handles, radiator grilles, ventilation system components, heater housings, seat belt fastenings, console panels, loudspeaker housings, interior trim and other uses. For some years there was extensive use of electroplated ABS. Whilst this continues to be used for nameplates, reflectors and other parts where a bright reflecting surface is a requirement, it has tended to fall out of favour simply for decoration. 

Polyamide PPOs are manufactured by General Electric (Noryl GTX), BASF having now withdrawn from marketing their product (Ultranyl). Usage of the blends has so far been mainly in the automobile field for such applications as valance panels, wheel trims, grilles, rear quarter panels, front bumpers and tailgates. 

Total enclosure may be in the form of a room with grilles to facilitate air flow this functions as a hood and operates under a slight negative pressure with controls located externally. Entry is restricted and usually entails use of comprehensive personal protective equipment. Ancillary requirements may include air filters/scmbbers, atmospheric monitoring, decontamination procedures and a permit-to-work system (see page 417). 

Lift a ceiling tile and examine the plenum for potential problems. Walls or full-height partitions that extend to the floor above can obstruct or divert air movement in ceiling plenums unless transfer grilles have been provided. If fire dampers have been installed to allow air circulation through walls or partitions, confirm that the dampers are open. Construction debris and damaged or loose material in the plenum area may become covered with dust and can release particles and fibers. 

Identification of the pollutant source and installation of the local exhaust is critically important. For example, an improperly designed local exhaust can draw other contaminants through the occupied space and make the problem worse. The physical layout of grilles and diffusers relative to room occupants and pollutant sources can be important. If supply diffusers are all at one end of a room and returns are all at the other end, the people located near the supplies may be provided with relatively clean air while those located near the returns breathe air that has already picked up contaminants from all the sources in the room that are not served by local exhaust. 

Compact air jets are formed by cylindrical tubes, nozzles, and square or rectangular openings with a small aspect ratio that are unshaded or shaded by perforated plates, grills, etc. Compact air jets are three-dimensional and axisymmetric at least at some distance from the diffuser opening. The maximum velocity in the cross-section of the compact jet is on the axis. 

Incomplete radial jets are supplied through outlets with grills having diverging vanes, and have a coerced angle of expansion. At some distance this kind of jet tends to transform into a compact one. 

The ratio to z depends only on (gag-, zjx, = 2/3 tga.g, and the ratio of x, /Xq has a constant value equal to 0.578. To clarify the trajectory equation of inclined jets for the cases of air supply through different types of nozzles and grills, a series of experiments were conducted. The trajectory coordinates were defined as the points where the mean values of the temperatures and velocities reached their maximum in the vertical cross-sections of the jet. It is important to mention that, in such experiments, one meets with a number of problems, such as deformation of temperature and velocity profiles and fluctuation of the air jet trajectory, which reduce the accuracy in the results. The mean value of the coefficient E obtained from experimental data (Fig. 7.25) is 0.47 0.06. Thus the trajectory of the nonisothermal jet supplied through different types of outlets can be calculated from... 

Diffuser jet interaction is a common case when air is supplied into ventilated rooms through multiple air diffusers (e.g., sidewall-mounted grills or ceiling-mounted air diffusers) or using speciality air distribution systems. Interacting jets can be supplied...
