Graphite lubricants include the dry powder, admixtures with liquid lubricants or greases, volatile liquids compounded with film-forming substances to produce bonded dry films, synthetic resins and powder metal compositions containing graphite for bearings, and finely divided suspensions in liquids (colloidal graphite). [Pg.577]

Dichloroethane [107-06-2] ethylene chloride, ethylene dichloride, CH2CICH2CI, is a colorless, volatile Hquid with a pleasant odor, stable at ordinary temperatures. If we add a known amount of a compound to our solution, we can use it to quantify the material of interest. This is great except that we may not want to contaminate our material with some other compound. A number of people have looked at using standards that are volatile so that they can be got rid of later (TMS is an example that we have seen published). The problem with this approach is that if the sample is volatile then you need to run it quickly before it disappears. TMS disappears really quickly from DMSO so it is probably not a good idea in this case. TMS also suffers from the fact that it has a long relaxation time so you have to be very careful with your experiment to ensure that you do not saturate the signal. The last major problem with TMS is that it comes at the same part of the spectrum as silicon grease which can be present in samples. Choosing a standard so that it has a short relaxation time, is volatile and comes in a part of the spectrum free of interference is really tricky. In fact, we wouldn t recommend it at all. [Pg.158]

Metals, especially the more common iron and steel types, come from the foundry coated with oil, grease and most often a generous layer of oxide formed on the exposed surfaces. All these materials must be removed from the surfaces and from the pores of the metal to ensure that the oils and greases cannot exude under the increased temperature of vulcanisation, when they become more mobile or volatile. Surface oxides also must be removed for they are often only loosely attached to the metal substrate and will detach themselves under duress in service, after bonding. [Pg.194]

More recent developments in this country have included synthesis of relatively stable oils of low volatility, low pour point, and high viscosity index by esterification of octyl alcohols, such as 2-ethylhexanol, with dibasic acids such as adipic acid and sebacic acid (3). Octyl alcohols may be synthesized from petroleum hydrocarbons via the oxo process. Although of relatively high cost, these synthetic oils find general application in making greases for lubrication of antifriction bearings and instruments in aircraft. [Pg.245]

Oils, greases and waxes are used for the temporary inhibition of corrrosion. They act as a barrier, preventing the condensation of water on the metal surface. Inhibitors such as piperidine (59) and morpholine (60) are often incorporated to give added protection. Volatile amines are also used in boilers they function by reducing the acidity of the steam condensate, thereby making it less corrosive. [Pg.409]
