First of a family of alkoxylated linear alcohol carboxylic acid adduct sodium salts. These are low-foaming surfactants with moderately high caustic solubility. Their excellent sequestering ability makes them unique among surfactants and truly multifunctional in character. Applications include laundry detergents, tub and tile cleaners, metal cleaners and alkaline hard surface cleaners. These surfactants can eliminate or minimize the need for builders in a formulation.

For hard-surface cleaners, the expected foam profile has to be versatile. Multipurpose-cleaner flash foam is a signal of the presence of the product in a water bucket and, to a certain extent, of its efficacy, combined with the water s change of appearance. ALfter perception of this first signal of efficacy by the consumer, foam has to break very quickly to convey to the user that, at the end of the cleaning process, the product will be readily rinsed off the surface. 

Main areas in which excessive foam is not desirable are automatic laundry and dish washing machines, as well as hard-surface cleaners for which a tedious rinsing operation is not convenient. 

Combining the SME performance data with the previously mentioned hydrotropic evaluations suggests they may be good choices as hydrotropes in hard-surface cleaners. The highly acidic and alkaline formulations will need to be avoided due to SME s tendency to hydrolyze in extreme conditions. Formulations that contain high amounts of surfactant where high foam is desirable are also good candidate formulations for SMEs.
