Profile foamed

There are many ways in which foams can be processed and used as slabs, blocks, boards, sheets, molded shapes, sprayed coatings, extruded profiles, foamed in place in existing cavities, in which the liquid material is poured and allowed to foam, and as structural foams (Chapter 6, STRUCTURAL FOAM). Conventional equipment such as extruders, injection, or compression machines is used. However specially designed machines are available to just produce foamed products. [Pg.496]

For example, in profile foam operations, where higher density foams are desired, it is general practice to use chemical blowing agents (CBA). These materials, which decompose under polymer melt processing conditions to yield gases to expand the polymer, are usually dry-blended with the resin and then fed to the extruder. They can also be compounded directly into the resin by the polymer supplier and provided as a ready-to-use masterbatch. [Pg.48]

Foamed polyurethane. The basic chemicals are mixed in the liquid state with foaming agents, and swell into a low-density foam which sets by polymerization into a rigid mass. As the swelling material will expand into any shape required, it is ideal for the core of sandwich panels, and the sheet material skins may be flat or profiled. When the panels are manufactured the mixture is injected between the inner and outer skins and expands to the thickness required, adhering to the lining materials. [Pg.174]

Plastic products are made by a variety of basic manufacturing processes. As an example a major method such as extrusion has subdivisions that include profile, pipe, tube, film, sheet, coating, post forming, etc. equipment In injection molding there are subdivisions such as coinjection, gas assist, foam, inmold decorating, etc. equipment. There are literally hundreds of processes used with only about the dozen, as reviewed in this chapter, that are principally used (2). [Pg.442]

We use variants of profile extrusion to produce tubing -with diameters of less then 1 mm and pipes with diameters exceeding 1 m, Wall thicknesses can vary from a few tens of micrometers up to several centimeters. Extruded window and door frames are more complex than pipes. Such profiles are largely hollow with internal ribs and fins that reinforce and divide the interior into two or more channels. We use solid rubber profiles in applications such as door seals and windshield wipers. We can produce foamed extrudates by incorporating a blowing agent, such as butane or carbon dioxide, into the polymer in the molten state. As the polymer exits the die, its internal pressure drops and the dissolved gas expands to form bubbles within the product. Examples of foamed extrudates include pipe insulation and automobile door gaskets. [Pg.218]

Paint stripping and removal accounts for 30% of MeC by end-use application, adhesives 20%, metal cleaning 10%, aerosols 10%, pharmaceuticals 10%, chemical processing 10% and flexible PU foams 5%. Polystyrene (PS), a highly rigid and surface-hardened thermoplastic, is glass clear and almost colorless. Its typical slight yellow tinge is easy to compensate for by adding transparent blue colorants to adjust the color. Polystyrene softens between 80 and 100°C. It is processed between about 170 and 280°C, up to a maximum of 300°C, without color change, by any of the methods which are recommended for thermoplastics. The list of products includes extrusion made sheets, profiles, and films, which are often foamed. [Pg.173]

PBT-PC blends show increased melt strength allowing them to be easily processed by blow molding and profile extrusion. The PBT-PC blends have been extruded into sheet and thermoformed into parts. Enhanced melt strength allows PBT-PC blends to be foamed. Structural foam grades for injection molding (10-30% density reduction) are commercially available. [Pg.310]

A crash test rig was developed to simulate the high loads on components in and on street vehicles in the case of a colhsion. It provides profiles of deformation, energy dissipation and retardation as a function of time. The effect of test velocity and temp, on the behaviour of PP foam (Neopolen P) samples of various density was examined. 2 refs. [Pg.110]

Examples are given of the use of extruded PE foam sections in conjunction with other polymeric materials in the production of triangular, semicircular, rectangular and trapezoidal profiles, e.g. beam-like structures in which the rigid support may be of GRP. The foam can be bonded with thermally-fusible adhesives or two-sided self adhesive tape affixed to the foam prior to fabricating. A standard range of the foam prodncts is available, but other types can be tailor-made. [Pg.112]

Thermoplastic structural foams with bulk densities not less than 50% of the solid resin densities are considered. Cellular morphology, uniform-density cell behaviour, the I-beam concept in designing, core-density profile and the role of the skin, mechanical properties, and ductile-brittle transitions are discussed. 63 refs. [Pg.117]

The catalytic bed (70 cm ), supported by a metallic gauze, is located in the reforming section. Water is fed to the reactor at the bottom of the metallic gauze. The temperature inside the reactor is monitored by four thermocouples one (Tcomb) is located on the SiC foam and the other three (T ref L, T ref M, T ref H) are located at 25, 50 and 75%, respectively, of the catalytic bed height to provide the reactor temperature axial profile. Moreover, additional thermocouples monitor... [Pg.304]
