Fatty acids issues

The main objective of this work consists in the synthesis of monoglycerides from glycerol and fatty acids issued from vegetable oils in the presence of solid catalysts. Indeed, the use of natural feedstocks presents several advantages i) the diversity of the available products, ii) the renewable character of natural compounds. Moreover, in the chemical industry, the use of natural products opens an area of investigation of new processes and of new products some of which are quite different from those accessible by petrochemical paths. [Pg.539]

Thermal Oligomerization. Commercial manufacture of dimer acids began ia 1948 with Emery Industries use of a thermal process involving steam pressure. Patents were issued ia 1949 (45) and 1953 (46) that describe this process. Earlier references to fatty acid oligomerization, antedating the USDA work of 1941—1948, occur ia patents ia 1918 and 1919 (47,48), and ia papers written ia 1929—1941 (49—51). The presence of characteristic peaks from palmitic and stearic acids is consistent with the hypothesis of the use of oil as binding media. The lack of any characteristic ions issued from egg tempera means that ToF-SIMS does not allow detection of egg tempera in this sample. However, it could be present but is not detected due to high degradation occurring in very old egg tempera. The presence of short chain fatty acids, which are not detected in the new reference sample, is attributed to oil ageing. Artificial liver support systems aim at the extracorporeal removal of water soluble and protein-bound toxins (albumin being the preferential binding protein) associated with hepatic failure. Albumin contains reversible binding sites for substances such as fatty acids, hormones, enzymes, dyes, trace metals and drugs [26] and therefore helps elimination by kidneys of substances that are toxic in the unbound state.
