As Table 21-1 suggests, molecular chlorine is a tremendously versatile industrial chemical. This element is a leading industrial chemical because of this versatility rather than any single application, although polymers account for about one third of its uses. In recent years, however, the industrial use of chlorine has come under strong attack from many environmentally conscious groups. Experiments were conducted in which purified trichloroethylene (1 mg in acetone) was applied to the shaved backs of female ICR/Ha Swiss mice (Van Duuren et al. 1979). In an initiation-promotion study, a single application of trichloroethylene was followed by repeated application of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) promoter. In a second study, mice were treated with trichloroethylene three times per week without a promoter. No significant tumor incidences were observed in these studies. Doses used in these studies were well below the maximum tolerated dose, which is often not reached in dermal studies. 

It would take approximately 9 man years of work to replace a single application of a withdrawn substance, and little of that cost would be recoverable from the market. That is a substantial investment in an R D programme whose outcome leaves you exactly where you were before you started. It may be necessary to do this to preserve market position, but it is not an attractive option.

For low-use rate compounds applied on a grams per hectare basis, it has sometimes been necessary to apply the cumulative seasonal rate in a single application in order to improve analytical detection. Advances in analytical chemistry have greatly improved the trace-level detection of agrochemicals in soil but it is still prudent to verify that sufficient analytical sensitivity exists to detect agrochemicals at their anticipated soil... 

The agent of choice for scabies is permerthrin 5% (Elimite) cream. Alternative agents in subjects who cannot use permethrin are crotamiton 10% (Eurax) and oral ivermectin (Stromectal) 200 mcg/kg as a single dose. To initiate the treatment with permerthrin, the skin should be scrubbed in a warm soapy bath to remove the scabs. Studies on oranges (Table IX) have shown that surface residues of parathion are also of relatively low magnitude in comparison with the quantities found within the peel ( ). Most previous attempts to obtain X-ray diffraction data at very low temperatures (< 80 K) have used custom built systems with closed cycle helium refrigerators mounted on large, robust four circle diffractometers. In order to remove the inherent disadvantages of these systems - cost, single application, absorption and scattering of the windows - we have built an open flow system from mainly off-the-shelf components which uses liquid helium as the cryogen. Silicone resins, which after being sprayed onto the mould surface form a resin under the influence of the heat of the metal mould, are effective and relatively long lasting release agents. A single application of the resin will remain viable for a number of products lifts before requiring reapplication.
