Equipment check-out

Equipment Check-out. A large table next to the check-out window can be very valuable. Prior to class, equipment needed can be taken from the shelves and lined up on the table, ready for quick delivery to the students. When returned, it is placed on the table and taken back to storage after the end of the period rush is over. 

The detailed schedule of activities for each chemical weapons destruction facility for the upcoming year, identifying time required for design, construction or modification of the facility, installation of equipment, equipment check-out and operator training, destruction operations for each specific type of chemical weapon, and scheduled periods of inactivity.

This phase involves the performance of check-out and nm-in activities to ensure that equipment and piping are mechanically integrated, functionally located and free of obstructions It is also necessary to ensure that instruments and controls are fimchoning properly and that all previously identified problems have been addressed. Failure related maintenance demands Whenever a repair is made on a piece of equipment, a complete functional check-out is usually performed on it and the other equipment in the functional loop. Consequently, the number of shutdown and startup demands to repair degraded and incipient failures must be added to the number of catastrophic demand failures to determine total maintenance-related demands. These numbers are gathered from the encoded failure data that are in turn extracted from the raw plant records. 

Drive-belt tensioning and the replacement of broken or worn belts is a normal maintenance procedure, but may be missed if equipment is out of sight. A routine check will find these out. 

Gradually all things that are to go into the laboratory, such as work benches, refrigerators, safety storage cabinets, floor-mounted equipment, desks, file cabinets, balance tables, and a myriad of other items, are in place. Now is another good time to check on traffic patterns. Will a piece of equipment stick out too far Will a desk chair cause obstruction Will the refrigerator door cause problems when open These are just a few of the questions that should be asked again. 

The purchase price of some instruments may include set-up and check-out by a manufacturer s representative. In such cases, the laboratory operator should only check for physical condition of a shipment and call the representative about its arrival. Other equipment will generally be set up at its permanent location as soon as it is unpacked and checked. Supplies will be taken to their designated storage areas. The accompanying warranty cards should be filled out and mailed as soon as possible. 

Before the individual pieces of equipment are started, they should be checked out. Conoco, as part of its prestartup procedure, sent observers to the manufacturer s plant to observe the fabrication and to test the equipment before it was shipped. They found, among other things, at least 5 pumps with defective seals. These errors were corrected by the vendor before the items were shipped. This checking was in addition to checks performed during the construction phase. 

The storage and feed equipment, when delivered on site, is assembled by our own mechanical department. It is checked out and tests are conducted over a 4 - 6 week period to optimize the additive type and composition and demonstrate the most effective means of reducing particulate emissions. A technical services engineer monitors performance as part of the steady state operation. 

D. Check-Out and Troubleshooting. Even though an experiment may be well conceived and the equipment properly designed, it is usually necessary to remove small defects in workmanship from a newly constructed or altered apparatus. Therefore, the experimentalist must be prepared to check for faults whenever a change has been made. For example, it is necessary to carefully check a new vacuum apparatus or glove box for leaks. 

Prior to the commencement of any production, all state and local regulations must be adhered to, as the operations may be hazardous from both a mechanical and chemical aspect. Safety and emergency protocols must be drawn up and checked out. All safety equipment must be thoroughly checked before commencement of any work. 

Providing the services of factory representatives for equipment or other items as required for construction supervision and final check-out. 

Check out the Internet for possible waste disposal sites. Table 1.5 gives a few Web sites we came across that deal with disposal of used computer equipment. 

Consider the cost of shipping the unit. You can get a very good deal on some used units, but the shipping may be very high if it is a heavy unit, and if it is being shipped a considerable distance. Check out the shipping cost in total and be sure to include shipping insurance in your costs. Also consider what additional equipment will be needed to operate the unit.

In an ideal world, sterilization validation begins even before the purchase of an autoclave. Although this would appear to belong mainly with the engineering side of sterilization, it is also of major importance to the operational and control side too. A sterilization cycle must be tailored to each product and its conlainer/closure system, so it is best to have first defined the range of potential applications, to be sure that new equipment is correctly specified. On installation. the autoclave should be checked out to ensure that it meets its specification, that it has been properly installed, and that its instrumentation is within calibration. 

As a final check, operating instructions are prepared and checked out on the model arrangement to pick up any flaws in equipment functioning. Over-all plan and elevation drawings can then be made with the aid of the model, followed by individual specifications for each individually assigned unit. 

Functionality testing To detect lack of functionality in a completed system. This functional inspection can often include problem diagnosis, as with checks of avionics equipment in aircraft. Often functional inspection is particularly dangerous and costly, as in test flying aircraft or checking out procedures for a chemical process. 

The initial part of the test program has been completed. Although this phase consists primarily of equipment and instrumentation check-out, a limited number of ambient helium- and hydrogen-gas-pressurized liquid-hydrogen expulsion tests have been carried out. 

Be sure to lock your drawer or locker before leaving the laboratory at the end of each period and to bring your key or combination to the next period. During or at the end of the term you will be required to replace all equipment that has been used up, lost, or broken. If you withdraw from the course, arrange with your instructor to check out your apparatus immediately. The Department of Chemistry reserves the right to open your drawer or locker in an emergency (for example, to search for or repair a leak in the plumbing).
