Failure related

This report provides an aging assessment of electric motors and was conducted under the auspices of the USNRC NPAR. Pertinent failure-related information was derived from LERs, IPRDS, NPRDS, and NPE including failure modes, mechanisms, and causes for motor problems. In addition, motor design and materials of construction were reviewed to identify age-sensitive components. The study included consideration of the seismic susceptibility of age-degraded motor components to externally-induced vibrational effects. 

The demand-related exposure is the historical number of demands for change of state experienced by the equipment population. In theory, the evaluation of this demand exposure is rather simple. In practice, the number of demands on a piece of equipment can originate from four different sources testing, automatic and manual initiation, failure related maintenance, and interfacing maintenance. The contribution each of these categories makes to demand related exposures is summarized below ... 

Failure related maintenance demands Whenever a repair is made on a piece of equipment, a complete functional check-out is usually performed on it and the other equipment in the functional loop. Consequently, the number of shutdown and startup demands to repair degraded and incipient failures must be added to the number of catastrophic demand failures to determine total maintenance-related demands. These numbers are gathered from the encoded failure data that are in turn extracted from the raw plant records. 

Interfacing nuiintenance demands When maintenance is completed on equipment, for example, a pump, a complete functional check of it and its associated equipment (e g., isolation valves), is usually performed before the equipment is returned to service. It is important to note that in this case the interface demand is placed on the associated equipment, not the equipment that failed. Interfacing maintenance demands are counted separately from failure-related demands. 

Demand spectrum The total number of demands for the data window experienced by the component population, considering test, interface, failure-related maintenance, and automatic and manual initiation demands.
