Engineering thermoplastics thermoplastic polyesters

Electrical relay components, relay bases, cases, and coil forms make use of a range of engineering thermoplastics, thermoplastic polyesters, nylons, polyphenylenes, LCPs, and thermoplastic pol5dmide Vespel TP can be used for underhood electrical applications due to its high temperature properties, impact resistance, and automotive chemical resistance. ... [Pg.610]

Dibromostyrene and derivatives include graft copolymers with polypropylene. They are recommended with ABS and stryenes, most engineering thermoplastics, unsaturated polyester resins, and polyurethane foams. They are not recommended for PVC, PS foam, and rigid PU foam. [Pg.122]

Color/Transparency. Almost all amorphous engineering thermoplastics, except PC and some polyester carbonates, are inherently colored. Even polycarbonates have yellowness indexes (YI) (36) of 0.1 to 5.0. Colorless material is produced from these resins by compounding with complementary blue dyes which reduce transmission. Ha2e in amorphous resins is an indication of particulates. Ha2e reduces optical clarity and transmission. [Pg.264]

Highly aromatic thermoplastic polyesters first beeame available in the 1960s but the original materials were somewhat difficult to process. These were followed in the 1970s by somewhat more processable materials, commonly referred to as polyarylates. More recently there has been considerable activity in liquid crystal polyesters, which are in interest as self-reinforeing heat-resisting engineering thermoplastics. [Pg.695]

Polyester, thermoplastic TP polyesters have different grades. Polybutylene tereph-thalate (PBT) a crystalline polymer and an excellent engineering material. It has marginal chemical resistance but resists moisture, creep, fire, fats, and oils. Molded items are hard, bright colored, and retain their impact strength at temperatures as low as — 40°F (-40°C). Uses include auto louvers, under-the-hood electricals, and mechanical parts. [Pg.428]

Polyesters are one of the most versatile classes of polymers ever produced, covering a wide range of properties and applications. Polyesters are present in fibers, engineering thermoplastics, and high-performance polymers as well as in thermosetting resins and elastomers. Table 2.1 lists the chemical structure, abbreviations, and uses of some commercially important thermoplastic polyesters. [Pg.20]

Aromatic-aliphatic polyesters, in which either R1 or R2 is aromatic, are generally high-melting (150-270°C) semicrystalline materials that find applications as engineering thermoplastics, films, or fibers. [Pg.32]

This class of polyesters consists of four major commercial polymers and their copolymers, namely PET, PTT, PBT, and PEN (see Table 2.1). They compete for engineering thermoplastics, films, and fibers markets with other semicrystalline polymers, such as aliphatic polyamides, and for some other applications with amorphous engineering plastics such as polycarbonate. The syntheses of PET and PBT, detailed in numerous reviews and books,2-5 are described in Sections 23.2.2 and 2.3.2.1. [Pg.44]

PET, PTT, and PBT have similar molecular structure and general properties and find similar applications as engineering thermoplastic polymers in fibers, films, and solid-state molding resins. PEN is significantly superior in terms of thermal and mechanical resistance and barrier properties. The thermal properties of aromatic-aliphatic polyesters are summarized in Table 2.6 and are discussed above (Section 2.2.1.1). [Pg.44]

Typical additive packages for engineering thermoplastics have been described by Titzschkau [9], such as processing aids for PA, PP, or PET/PBT, three-component additive packages for polyamides and polyesters (nucleating agent, lubricant and process heat stabiliser) and coated copper stabilisers for polyamides. Additive packages or combinations of up to five or more additives are quite common. A typical white window PVC profile formulation comprises an acrylic impact modifier, TiC>2, CaCC>3, calcium stearate, a... [Pg.7]

Polyesters, which are a class of engineering thermoplastics, are found in a wide variety of applications including carbonated drink bottles, fibers for synthetic fabrics, thin films for photographic films and food packaging, injection molded automotive parts, and housings for small appliances. In this chapter, we svill explore the synthesis of this class of polymers. We will also look at the typical properties and end uses for the most common of these resins, polyethylene terephthalate and polybutylene terephthalate, which are commonly known as PET and PBT, respectively. [Pg.371]

Saturated complex polyesters, particularly, poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT) are used as engineering thermoplastics possesing good thermo - and wearstability, excellent moulding. These properties also allow to use them as matrix material for polymer composites [1], One of the perspective ways of search of effective catalysts for such systems is kinetic study of the reesterification model reaction, performed in the presence of various catalysts and comparison it with the results of the similar reaction without catalyst. Clarification on the example of model system of the most effective catalysts list allows to use them for obtaining both filled and nonfilled PBT and compare catalytic activity of various catalysts. The purpose of the... [Pg.233]

Other potential applications of PTT are in monofilaments, non-wovens, films, engineering thermoplastics and molded goods. Hsu [80] has patented paper forming fabrics made with PTT monofilaments for use in papermaking machines because this combines the chemical resistance of a polyester and the resiliency... [Pg.385]

Aromatic carboxylic dianhydride chain extenders (e.g. PMDA) are a low-cost way of converting recycled PET flakes into high-IV crystalline pellets that can be used in high-value applications (e.g. bottles, strapping, foam, engineering alloys/compounds, etc.) (see Figure 14.2). PMDA is an effective chain extension additive for thermoplastic polyesters such as PET and PBT. It is suitable for the following applications ... [Pg.500]

The class of polyester-based liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) represent one of the most attractive materials in the field of engineering thermoplastics because of their superior mechanical properties, heat resistance, accuracy of dimensions, moldability and the excellent balance of these properties [1-5]. LCPs have been recently expanding their applications, in particular, those for precision electronic parts appropriate for surface mount technology (SMT). [Pg.645]

Many engineering thermoplastics such as nylon, high-impact PS, polyesters, and toughened plastics exhibit responses similar to those shown in the next two curves in Figure 3.3, designated ductile. Here the stress achieves a maximum called a yield stress at a specific strain. As strain increases beyond... [Pg.39]
