Emulsions of fatty- and petroleum-based substances, both oils and waxes, of the o/w type are made by using blends of sorbitan fatty esters and their poly(oxyethylene) derivatives. Mixtures of poly(oxyethylene(20)) sorbitan monostearate (Polysorbate 60) and sorbitan monostearate are typical examples of blends used for lotions and creams. Both sorbitan fatty acid esters and their poly(oxyethylene) derivatives are particularly advantageous in cosmetic uses because of their very low skin irritant properties. Sorbitan fatty ester emulsifiers for w/o emulsions of mineral oil are used in hair preparations of both the lotion and cream type. Poly(oxyethylene(20)) sorbitan monolaurate is useflil in shampoo formulations (see Hairpreparations). Poly(oxyethylene) sorbitan surfactants are also used for solubilization of essential oils in the preparation of colognes and after-shave lotions. [Pg.54]

Surfactants are widely used industrially and perform a variety of functions. As processing aids they help to disperse fillers and other ingredients and to form and stabilize emulsions. They are key components in shampoos, detergents, polishes and cleaning products. In other... [Pg.407]

Functional equivalents are designed to perform the same function in a formula. Depending on the formula and the other components, a crashing-out effect (separation of an emulsion) or other separation could occur that destroys the use of the final product. An example would be in a shampoo where all the surfactants have risen to the top. The shampoo would not perform and the customer would be very dissatisfied with the product. When trying to get a functional equivalent approved, extensive testing m be required to make sure that the product remains stable with the new material. [Pg.65]

Siloxane surfactants are crucial ingredients in personal care products they are the components of shampoos and conditioners that improve the softness and silkiness of hair, and are also used in shaving foams, toothpastes, antiper-spirants, cosmetics, hair-styling gels and bath oils. These applications follow from a combination of properties, e.g. low surface tension, water-solubility or dispersion in water to give emulsions, and low toxicity. Some of these properties contrast sharply with those required by polysilox-anes used in, for example, greases, sealants and rubbers. Siloxane surfactants contain a permethylated backbone which incorporates polar substituents. For example, polyether groups are hydrophilic and allow the polymers to be used in aqueous media, a prerequisite for use in shampoos and hair conditioners. [Pg.424]
