Paper process

Used in reprographic processes, particularly the ozalid blue-print paper processes. [Pg.133]

The examples in the preceding section, of the flotation of lead and copper ores by xanthates, was one in which chemical forces predominated in the adsorption of the collector. Flotation processes have been applied to a number of other minerals that are either ionic in type, such as potassium chloride, or are insoluble oxides such as quartz and iron oxide, or ink pigments [needed to be removed in waste paper processing [92]]. In the case of quartz, surfactants such as alkyl amines are used, and the situation is complicated by micelle formation (see next section), which can also occur in the adsorbed layer [93, 94]. [Pg.478]

Aloisture Absorbent Synthetic Paper. Processes for making a water absorbent synthetic paper with dimensional stabihty have been developed by several companies. In a process developed by Mitsubishi Rayon, acrylic fiber is insolubilized by hydra2ine and then hydroly2ed with sodium hydroxide. The paper, formed from 100 parts fiber and 200 parts pulp, has a water absorption 28 times its own weight (96). Processes for making hygroscopic fibers have also been reported in the patent Hterature. These fibers are used in moisture absorbing nonwovens for sanitary napkins, filters, and diapers. [Pg.285]

Typical papers processed using wash deinking are 100% old newspaper and sorted office paper from which toner ink-printed paper has been removed. The effluent from washers is heavily laden with ink, mineral coating and filler particles, and small cellulose fibers. As a result, it can be difficult to clarify. [Pg.8]

The principle uses of Na2S04 are in the manufacture of paper, soaps, and detergents. These accounted for 65% of U.S. consumption from 1990 to 1995, representing a significant shift from 1980 when paper production alone consumed 67%. Pulp (qv) and paper consume only 25% (2). The kraft paper process uses a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide to digest wood chips. Both the sulfide and hydroxide are generated, starting with sodium sulfate as the raw material. [Pg.207]

Various improvements in the sulfur dioxide reduction processes have been commercialized, including the Canadian International Paper Process (1946) and the Kesting, Persson, and Holst processes. A variation combining both chloride and sulfur dioxide reductant processes was developed and patented by KemaNord AB (47). [Pg.482]

Silver is most commonly recovered by electrolysis or metallic replacement from the processing solutions or by ion exchange (qv) from the wash water (123). Loss of chemicals from one tank into the next has been minimized. The color paper process has progressed from five chemical solutions, three washes, and a replenishment rate of 75 lL/cm (70 mL/ft ) of film for each of the five solutions to two chemical solutions, one wash, and replenishment rates of 15 lL/cm (16 mL/ft ) and 5 lL/cm (5 mL/ft ). For color negative films, developer replenishment has dropped from over 300 to 43 lL/cm (40 mL/ft ). Regeneration of the now reduced overflow has decreased chemical discharge by as much as 55% (124). [Pg.481]

Biocides are also used in the pulp and paper industry for the protection of processing materials. The main biocides used in this application fall into the preservative range and can be different from others employed within the paper processing. [Pg.17]

This paper aims to introduce the problems that exist within the pulp and paper processing and detail how biocides can help to reduce these problems. [Pg.17]

The coatings and additives utilised during paper processing are also a significant source of microbiological contamination. The types that are frequently used are ... [Pg.19]

As described in earlier sections, there are several potential sources of microbial contamination which can enter the paper mill. Once in the paper processing plant, other factors can then influence the degree of contamination. The conditions within a plant are very often extreme, with high temperatures and humidity arising from the process itself. Hence perfect conditions exist for other microbiological problems to develop. [Pg.20]

Good plant hygiene procedures are critical to maintaining an effective production, however due to the nature of the process, this will not be wholly effective and the use of biocides is critical to maintain a low microbiological population to prevent paper failure. The table below (Table 4) illustrates the types of biocides that are commonly encountered within the paper processing. [Pg.22]

Pulp and paper processes generate large volumes of wastewaters that might adversely affect freshwater or marine ecosystems. [Pg.873]

Due to the large volumes of water used in pulp and paper processes, virtually all U.S. mills have primary and secondary wastewater treatment systems to remove particulates and BOD. These systems also provide significant removals (e.g., 30 to 70%) of other important parameters such as AOX and chemical oxygen demand (COD). [Pg.873]

In pulp and paper processing, anthraquinone (AQ) accelerates the delignification of wood and improves liquor selectivity. The kinetics of the liquid-phase oxidation of anthracene (AN) to AQ with NO2 in acetic acid as solvent has been studied by Rodriguez and Tijero (1989) in a semibatch reactor (batch with respect to the liquid phase), under conditions such that the kinetics of the overall gas-liquid process is controlled by the rate of the liquid-phase reaction. This reaction proceeds through the formation of the intermediate compound anthrone (ANT) ... [Pg.113]

Some coupled systems allow measurement of the main N and P forms (nitrate, ammonia and orthophosphates) [22,27,29], among which is a system based on membrane technology in combination with semi-micro continuous-flow analysis (pCFA) with classical colorimetry. With the same principle (classical colorimetry), another system [30] proposes the measurement of phosphate, iron and sulphate by flow-injection analysis (FIA). These systems are derived from laboratory procedures, as in a recent work [31] where capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used for the separation of inorganic and organic ions from waters in a pulp and paper process.
