Surfactants shampoos

Many of the surfactants made from ethyleneamines contain the imidazoline stmcture or are prepared through an imidazoline intermediate. Various 2-alkyl-imidazolines and their salts prepared mainly from EDA or monoethoxylated EDA are reported to have good foaming properties (292—295). Ethyleneamine-based imida zolines are also important intermediates for surfactants used in shampoos by virtue of their mildness and good foaming characteristics. 2- Alkyl imidazolines made from DETA or monoethoxylated EDA and fatty acids or their methyl esters are the principal commercial intermediates (296—298). They are converted into shampoo surfactants commonly by reaction with one or two moles of sodium chloroacetate to yield amphoteric surfactants (299—301). The ease with which the imidazoline intermediates are hydrolyzed leads to arnidoamine-type stmctures when these derivatives are prepared under aqueous alkaline conditions. However, reaction of the imidazoline under anhydrous conditions with acryflc acid [79-10-7] to make salt-free, amphoteric products, leaves the imidazoline stmcture essentially intact. Certain polyamine derivatives also function as water-in-oil or od-in-water emulsifiers. These include the products of a reaction between DETA, TETA, or TEPA and fatty acids (302) or oxidized hydrocarbon wax (303). The amidoamine made from lauric acid [143-07-7] and DETA mono- and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate is a very effective water-in-od emulsifier (304). 

In the personal care market, fatty acid derivatives of proteins and amino acids (glutamic acid) are mainly used in mild shower and bath products, mild shampoos, surfactant-based face cleansers, cold-wave preparations and fixatives, baby wash formulations, as well as special emulsifiers for leave-on products.

Robbins [25] independently arrived at a similar conclusion suggesting that shampoo surfactants in a normal two-step shampoo operation are very effective in removing surface lipid nevertheless, because of their limited penetration into hair, they are less effective, but capable over time of removing internal lipid. 

Other soils have not been studied so extensively however, Robbins et al. [29] have shown that Cn alkyl sulfates or alkyl ether sulfates, the traditional shampoo surfactants, do not remove cationic surfactants from hair effectively under certain conditions. However, shorter chain-length anionics such as deceth-2 sulfate is more effective for removing cationics. In addition, alkyl ether sulfates are more effective for removing fatty acid soils in the presence of water hardness than alkyl sulfates [29]. 

The dissolution or the removal of structural lipids or proteinaceous matter from hair-probably from the cell membrane complex or epicuticle by either shampoos, surfactant solutions, or other cosmetic treatments-has been demonstrated by several different scientists. For example, Marshall and Ley [153] demonstrated the extraction of proteinaceous components from the cuticle of wool fiber by surfactant solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate, cetrimonium bromide, and triton X-100. Zahn and co-workers [154, 155] and Mahrle [156] independently showed that part of the lipid components of the cell membrane complex were removed from hair by permanent waving.

Ethoxylated Nonionics These are the largest group of nonionics. They consist of ethoxylated forms of alkylphenols, fatty alcohols, fatty esters, mono- and diglycerides, etc. Although these surfactants exhibit excellent cleansing properties they have poor foaming, and their application in shampoos has been limited. They can be found as solubilizers and emulsifiers. In some cases, nonionics are combined with certain shampoo surfactants to minimize eye irritation (11).
