Emulsion Process. The emulsion polymerization process utilizes water as a continuous phase with the reactants suspended as microscopic particles. This low viscosity system allows facile mixing and heat transfer for control purposes. An emulsifier is generally employed to stabilize the water insoluble monomers and other reactants, and to prevent reactor fouling. With SAN the system is composed of water, monomers, chain-transfer agents for molecular weight control, emulsifiers, and initiators. Both batch and semibatch processes are employed. Copolymerization is normally carried out at 60 to 100°C to conversions of - 97%. Lower temperature polymerization can be achieved with redox-initiator systems (51). [Pg.193]

Emulsion Adhesives. The most widely used emulsion-based adhesive is that based upon poly(vinyl acetate)—poly(vinyl alcohol) copolymers formed by free-radical polymerization in an emulsion system. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is typically formed by hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl acetate). The properties of the emulsion are derived from the polymer employed in the polymerization as weU as from the system used to emulsify the polymer in water. The emulsion is stabilized by a combination of a surfactant plus a coUoid protection system. The protective coUoids are similar to those used paint (qv) to stabilize latex. For poly(vinyl acetate), the protective coUoids are isolated from natural gums and ceUulosic resins (carboxymethylceUulose or hydroxyethjdceUulose). The hydroHzed polymer may also be used. The physical properties of the poly(vinyl acetate) polymer can be modified by changing the co-monomer used in the polymerization. Any material which is free-radically active and participates in an emulsion polymerization can be employed. Plasticizers (qv), tackifiers, viscosity modifiers, solvents (added to coalesce the emulsion particles), fillers, humectants, and other materials are often added to the adhesive to meet specifications for the intended appHcation. Because the presence of foam in the bond line could decrease performance of the adhesion joint, agents that control the amount of air entrapped in an adhesive bond must be added. Biocides are also necessary many of the materials that are used to stabilize poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions are natural products. Poly(vinyl acetate) adhesives known as "white glue" or "carpenter s glue" are available under a number of different trade names. AppHcations are found mosdy in the area of adhesion to paper and wood (see Vinyl polymers). [Pg.235]

Emulsion Polymerization. When the U.S. supply of natural mbber from the Far East was cut off in World War II, the emulsion polymerization process was developed to produce synthetic mbber. In this complex process, the organic monomer is emulsified with soap in an aqueous continuous phase. Because of the much smaller (<0.1 jira) dispersed particles than in suspension polymerization and the stabilizing action of the soap, a proper emulsion is stable, so agitation is not as critical. In classical emulsion polymerization, a water-soluble initiator is used. This, together with the small particle size, gives rise to very different kinetics (6,21—23). [Pg.437]

Many different combinations of surfactant and protective coUoid are used in emulsion polymerizations of vinyl acetate as stabilizers. The properties of the emulsion and the polymeric film depend to a large extent on the identity and quantity of the stabilizers. The choice of stabilizer affects the mean and distribution of particle size which affects the rheology and film formation. The stabilizer system also impacts the stabiUty of the emulsion to mechanical shear, temperature change, and compounding. Characteristics of the coalesced resin affected by the stabilizer include tack, smoothness, opacity, water resistance, and film strength (41,42). [Pg.464]

Partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) grades are preferred because they have a hydrophobic /hydrophilic balance that make them uniquely suited for emulsion polymerization. The compatibUity of the residual acetate units with the poly(vinyl acetate) latex particles partly explains the observed stabilization effect. The amount of PVA employed is normally 4—10% on the weight of vinyl acetate monomer. An example of liquid/liquid mixing is emulsion polymerization, where droplet size can be the most important parameter influencing product quality. Particle size is determined by impeller tip speed. If coalescence is prevented and the system stability is satisfactory, this will determine the ultimate particle size. However, if the dispersion being produced in the mixer is used as an intermediate step to carry out a liquid/liquid extraction and the emulsion must be settled out again, a dynamic dispersion is produced. Adsorption behavior and the effect on colloid stability of water soluble polymers with a lower critical solution temperature(LCST) have been studied using polystyrene latices plus hydroxy propyl cellulose(HPC). Saturated adsorption(As) of HPC depended significantly on the adsorption temperature and the As obtained at the LCST was 1.5 times as large as the value at room temperature. The high As value obtained at the LCST remained for a long time at room temperature, and the dense adsorption layer formed on the latex particles showed strong protective action against salt and temperature. Furthermore, the dense adsorption layer of HPC on silica particles was very effective in the encapsulation process with polystyrene via emulsion polymerization in which the HPC-coated silica particles were used as seed. [Pg.131]

Dispersion polymerization involves an initially homogeneous system of monomer, organic solvent, initiator, and particle stabilizer (usually uncharged polymers such as poly(A-vinyl-pyrrolidinone) and hydroxypropyl cellulose). The largest portion of the monomer (>95%) is dispersed as monomer droplets whose size depends on the stirring rate. The monomer droplets are stabilized by surfactant molecules absorbed on their surfaces. Monomer droplets have diameters in the range 1-100 pm (103-105 nm). The reaction described in this example is carried out in miniemulsion.Miniemulsions are dispersions of critically stabilized oil droplets with a size between 50 and 500 nm prepared by shearing a system containing oil, water,a surfactant and a hydrophobe. In contrast to the classical emulsion polymerization (see 5ect. 2.2.4.2), here the polymerization starts and proceeds directly within the preformed micellar "nanoreactors" (= monomer droplets).This means that the droplets have to become the primary locus of the nucleation of the polymer reaction. With the concept of "nanoreactors" one can take advantage of a potential thermodynamic control for the design of nanoparticles. Polymerizations in such miniemulsions, when carefully prepared, result in latex particles which have about the same size as the initial droplets.The polymerization of miniemulsions extends the possibilities of the widely applied emulsion polymerization and provides advantages with respect to copolymerization reactions of monomers with different polarity, incorporation of hydrophobic materials, or with respect to the stability of the formed latexes. [Pg.187]
