European refinery gasification projects include the API project in Falconara, Italy Sarlux project in Sardinia, Italy ISAB project in Sicily, Italy and Shell project in Pemis, Netherlands. Several plants are also reported to gasify biomass to produce gaseous fuels or electric power.

At a number of sites, the hot water produced by the well contains a high concentration of dissolved mineral salts (brine) that cause operational and corrosion problems with the equipment. The Ansaldo coinpany in Italy is studying H2 fueled PAFC power plants conceived as 850 kW standard modules for applications in the chemical industries, e.g., chloralkali plants, anunonia plants, petrochemical plants. The fuel consumption will be 750 Nm /h of hydrogen per MW electric power. Operation in the CHP mode would yield cogenerated heat at 140 °C in the amount of 0.7 MW per MW electric power [14].

Conceived, designed and produced in Italy, this city car comes in two versions with either petrol engine or electric motor. The electric car version. Figure 10.43, has three to four seats and a maximum speed of 85 km/h, with a range of 150-170 km in optimum conditions. The battery full charge is obtained in 8 h. Electric power is stored in a 9-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The car weight, without batteries, is 179 kg. 

Bicycles and scooters are the primary method of personal transportation in many countries, including China, Taiwan and many other parts of Asia. Scooters are also very popular in parts of Europe, such as Italy, and the Mediterranean countries. When a bicycle is used for transportation and for carrying personal goods, human power becomes very limiting in terms of range and convenience, particularly when traveling uphill. For this reason electric power-assist bicycles are being marketed in many countries. A typical electric bicycle is shown in Fig. 31.20.

Zinc-air modules for EV application are under development at the Edison company in Italy and by the Electric Fuel Ltd in Israel. In this case, the battery recharge also includes a mechanical step, namely the removal and replacement of the spent zinc electrodes. The actual electrochemical recharging process is carried out in a remote station. The proposed application to passenger vehicles considers the construction of specific stations where the removal and replacement of the spent zinc electrode pack is carried out automatically (Fig. 9.19). Demand in Europe is rising. In 2008, Italy s major electricity producer, Enel, began converting a major power plant in Civitavecchia from oil to coal to save on costs. Between 2008 and 2013, Italy may double its reliance on coal. In other European countries, as many as 50 coal-fired plants will be constructed in the next five years, sparking mounting concern about climate change. 

Two of the great industrial nations, Japan and France, are absent from this concert. The alternative solutions are not clearly foreseen for Japan. France has opted for the nuclear solution. In 2000 the electric capacity from nuclear power stations will be 108kW, which is 1.75 kW per inhabitant this compares with 1.05 kW per inhabitant for Sweden, 1.00 for Finland, 0.94 for Belgium, 0.91 for Canada, 0.7 for the USA and West Germany and only 0.48 for the UK.
