The pioneering 10-MW Solar One plant in Barstow, California, produced the most successful central receiver tests. The plant was funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and operated by Southern California Edison Company in the early to mid-1980s. EPRI provided technical evaluations of the experiment. The general conclusion drawn from Solar One and other experiments was that further substantial engineering development was needed. [Pg.106]

Commonwealth Edison Company in Chicago offers its Least Cost Planning load reduction program. In this program, businesses agree to curtail or reduce their electricity consumption to prescribed limits when the utility requests it. They are compensated with a special electricity rate that is performance-based. The worst performance during any curtailment period becomes the base for electricity charges. [Pg.240]

Hot water can be transported over longer distances with little heat loss while steam heat distribution systems can only serve high-density regions. The largest steam system in the United States is a part of New York s Consolidated Edison Company and serves a small part of Manhattan Island. The larger pipes or mains carry 200 to 250°F water under pressure. Re-... [Pg.243]

United States Siemens-Westinghouse projects on SOFC include a 250 kWe tubular prototype at the Irvine University campus (California), that will be operated by Southern California Edison Company. It is pressurized to 3.5 bar and thus is expected to give 200 kWe a coupled microturbine gives an additional 50 kWe. The have operated a tubular SOFC at pressures up to 15 atm. [Pg.340]

Zinc-air modules for EV application are under development at the Edison company in Italy and by the Electric Fuel Ltd in Israel. In this case, the battery recharge also includes a mechanical step, namely the removal and replacement of the spent zinc electrodes. The actual electrochemical recharging process is carried out in a remote station. The proposed application to passenger vehicles considers the construction of specific stations where the removal and replacement of the spent zinc electrode pack is carried out automatically (Fig. 9.19). Energy and power densities of the order of 200 Wh/kg and 100 W/kg, respectively, and long cyclability, which may provide the car with a 300 km range and a... [Pg.294]

Consolidated Edison Company of New York installed a simitar -I K MW unir in New York. City, but after a lew years, the project was closed down. The demonstration did mu see the production of power as planned because the acid electrolyte of the fuel celts became depleted due to emended program delays. In the fall of 1978 a full-scale test program was pursued in a commercial power plant of the Consolidated Edison Company in New York City (4). The test was conducted in three phases in Con Edison s 74th street station utilizing a 450,000 lb/hr steam electric Combustion Engineering tangentially-fired boiler, as shown in Table V. [Pg.71]

Studies from our laboratory described here were supported by the Office of Naval Research, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the Department of Energy, the Bureau of Radiological Health, and the Southern California Edison Company. It is a pleasure to acknowledge their patient help and guidance throughout the difficult initial phases of this research. [Pg.291]

Recently, a completely new approach to the design of HTSR furnaces was placed in pilot plant operation based on process and mechanical design developments by United Technologies Corporation (UTC). The first large-scale privately-financed nuclear power plant is being built by Consolidated Edison Company of New York. It is also the first thorium power plant in the world. The site of this 55,000,000 station, with a capacity of 200,000 kilowatts, is Indian Point, New York, on the Hudson River about 40 mil s north of New York City. This water-moderated breeder type of nuclear system will supply electricity to about one million New Yorkers starting in 1960. [Pg.234]

Due to a thunderstorm upstate, four separate power lines were struck by lightning earlier this evening. Within half an hour the utility suffered a massive loss of some 2,000 megawatts. At precisely 9 34 p.m., New York City experienced a total electrical blackout. As the Consolidated Edison Company struggles to restore power to the city, reports of widespread violence and looting have been flooding in. [Pg.288]

The first physical presentation of Frankenstein was H.M. Milner s play of 1826, Frankenstein or, the Man and the Monster and the story became the subject of one of the earliest films, the Edison Company s Frankenstein (1910). This film concentrated on the psychological aspects of the story, emphasizing the fact that the creation of the Monster was possible only because Frankenstein allowed his normal healthy mind to be overcome by evil and unnatural thoughts. Edison s ending was far... [Pg.17]

The reactor to be discussed is the large FWR manufactured by the Westinghouse Electric Company, which has been built for the Diablo Canyon station of the Pacific Gas Electric Company, the Donald C. Cook station of American Electric Power Corporation, and the Zion station of Commonwealth Edison Company. Rated capacities of 3250 MW (thermal) and 1060 MW (electric) have been used. The following brief description of this reactor was abstracted from the Safety Analysis Report of the Doiudd C. Cook station [Al]. [Pg.105]

To simulate recovery of uranium and thorium from irradiated 6 percent uranium, 94 percent thorium fuel from the first loading of Consolidated Edison Company s Indian Point 1 nuclear power plant, Oak Ridge National Laboratory [R3] made small-scale experiments on application of the acid Thorex process to fuel containing the appropriate amounts of uranium and thorium, with tracer quantities of the principal fission products. Spent uranium-thorium fuel from the Indian Point 1 plant was subsequently processed by Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc., at West Valley, New York, for recovery of uranium, but without separation of thorium from fission products. No account of this separation has been published. [Pg.515]
