Electronic marketplace/E-commerce In addition to the many databases available and person-to-person contacts, E-commerce in plastics has been conducted through suppliers web sites or the dot-commerce independent web sites that link material buyers with sellers in transactions or auction formats. During the year 2000 five plastic producers/suppliers and various elastomer producers/suppliers created a new and important business model of a joint-venture web site. It provides multiple companies to join forces to do business. This is a strategy some observers call competition and others regard as just another form of selling in. an electronic format. Regardless of how it is perceived, the model will help propel e-commerce into the mainstream of processor procurement due to the size and wealth of the companies involved. The plastic model example is the largest online business-to-business site todate. 

A few days after the above announcement GE Plastics, a pioneer in the use of the Web, said that it would enhance the e-commerce offerings available through its Polymerland distribution unit. It is targeted to expand the site beyond transactional e-commerce.

This definition needs some explanation. The viewpoints mentioned in it represent the stakeholders concerns about the system (the trustee) under consideration. A viewpoint can represent an individual user who decides about involving herself/himself in the co-operation with the system depending on its trustworthiness (consider for instance e-commerce or e-health applications) or can represent a class of users. An example of a latter is a non-profit institution which assesses a given Web service on behalf of its users (this is what Health On the Net foundation [1] does for the users of e-health services). A viewpoint can be highly formalized, for instance in the situation where the criteria to be met by the trust case (to consider it satisfactory) are documented and supported by regulations (like in the case for safety critical applications [2]) or are documented and widely accepted (which is the case for security critical systems [3]). For some viewpoints satisfactory may mean convincing and valid whereas for some other satisfactory may have more subjective interpretation.

Information technology and E-commerce have become increasingly important assets to the chemical industry. Spending on information technology reached 10.2 billion in 2000 and this represented a 75 percent increase over such expenditures of 1990.10 Selling via the Internet or E-commerce resulted in sales of 7.2 billion in 2000. Projections indicate that this type of business will grow rapidly and are expected to reach 150 billion by 2006. This means about one third of shipments will be via E-commerce transactions in five years.

There are more marketing approaches to the customer than ever before. Because the market is new, it is well set to embrace new routes such as the internet, farmers markets and buying co-operatives. The arrival of the internet has opened up an enormous opportunity for organic farmers to market their products directly to customers, and it has enabled consumers struggling to find organic meat to locate a suitable supplier and buy direct. Search engines such as Yahoo.com can allow potential customers who key in words such as organic and meat to access any number of e-commerce sites with which to do business.
