Farmers’ market

It is possible to sell directly to the consumer (via farm shops, farmers markets, mail order and internet), or to restaurants and institutional buyers, or to brokers, distributors, wholesalers, processors, food manufacturers, millers, abattoirs, butchers, farm shops, co-operatives, local retail stores, speciality stores and large supermarket chains. If one outlet does not work, it is possible to switch to another. Some farmers use multiple outlets, selling directly to consumers as well as commercially to middlemen. In this way, the farmer is not reliant on just one outlet. Some farmers also take the decision to have their own processing facility, such as milk processing or cheese-making. [Pg.130]

A farmers market is where a fee is paid for a market table, on a particular date. Here, the farmer displays organic produce and keeps all the proceeds. Some farmers have made contact in this way with fastidious restaurant chefs in search of premium ingredients. An ability to answer relevant questions helps in this context, as do tastings and, if possible, simple demonstrations. A quick walk round a farmers market is also a simple way to compare products and prices. [Pg.130]

There has been a resurgence in farmers markets in the USA. There are several advantages in this method of selling for example, more customers are attracted due to the variety of products being sold at one place and some customers are able to source special items in large quantities for home or their organisations. [Pg.130]

However, the disadvantage is that price comparison is easy and buyers in farmers markets are more bargain conscious than customers who visit individual farm locations. Also the farmer will have to take time away from production operations on the farm. [Pg.130]

Farmers can develop their mailing lists from contacts made at farm shops and farmers markets. They can also buy mailing lists or obtain lists from buyers clubs and from exhibitions and fairs. They could invite consumer groups to visit their farms, making sure the visitors leave a contact address for future promotions. [Pg.134]

So, the answer is not clear cut. The studies discussed here indicate that the results can be positive for organic farmers, but do not necessarily need to be so. When considering conversion, the farmer would be wise to take several factors into consideration, including the physical attributes of the farm and the farmer, marketing possibilities and the political climate in the country at that time. [Pg.235]

At a farmers market, there is a barrel filled with apples. In the barrel are 40 Fuji apples, 24 Gala apples, 12 Red Delicious apples, 24 Golden Delicious, and 20 McIntosh apples. If a customer reaches into the barrel and selects an apple without looking, what is the probability that she will pick a Fuji or a McIntosh apple ... [Pg.170]

Using the Local Harvest map, you can find all the farmers markets, family farms, locally grown produce, grass-fed livestock, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area. [Pg.18]

The diet that results is not an ism, it s a series of considerations. I choose my vegetables and fruits to be grown as close as possible to where I am. Because I live in California, that usually means within seventy-five miles, year-round. When traveling, I apply that standard as well. I seek out restaurants that value sustainable agriculture and track down each new city s farmers market. When I end up in a truck stop, I still choose potatoes over tomatoes in winter, knowing full well that the choice matters only in principle. (I don t cut corners with animal products, however, eating them only when I know the person who raised the animals and trust his or her methods to be humane.)... [Pg.25]

Visit your local farmers market to find more direct sources to buy meat from. Research local farms online. You may be able to buy directly from a farmer. Think about buying a share of a pig or a lamb with some like-minded friends. Or, if you re a CSA member (seepage 18), ask about the possibility of getting weekly meat deliveries. If you can t find meat that satisfies your need on a given evening, turn to other forms of protein like eggs, beans, and nuts (avoiding peanuts). Protein is extremely important to the development of your baby. [Pg.93]

Now for the fun part. Playing with your newborn may feel a little one-sided for the first few months, but that s okay with you. Here are some ideas for the few moments when she isn t eating, sleeping, or having her diaper changed. If you want to get out of the house, it s never too early for the farmers market. [Pg.232]

The reason I started shopping at the farmers market was quite capitalistic. I liked the freshness of all that I bought. Plus, farmers who cater to these new outposts—there are now farmers markets in nearly every town in Connecticut—are exquisitely attuned to our demands. [Pg.239]

Buy the organic, pesticide-free version of the approved food on your doc s list from your local health food store or farmers market. [Pg.273]

Organic milk also tends to reflect the change in seasons the milk that I buy from my farmers market tastes more grassy in the summertime and more buttery in the winter. It may be a subtle difference, but I imagine it s probably how milk tasted when it was delivered fresh to your doorstep decades ago. [Pg.18]
