Dry-cleaned

Prepare the zinc powder - sodium carbonate mixture by grinding together in a dry, clean mortar 25 g. of A.R. anhydrous sodium carbonate and 50 g. of the purest obtainable zinc powder. The reagent is unlikely to contain nitrogen, but traces of sulphur and halogens may be present. It is therefore essential to carry out a blank or control test for sulphur and halogens with every fresh batch of the mixture.

Acetate and triacetate are essentially unaffected by dilute solutions of weak acids, but strong mineral acids cause serious degradation. The results of exposure of heat-treated and untreated triacetate taffeta fabrics to various chemical reagents have been reported (9). Acetate and triacetate fibers are not affected by the perchloroethylene dry-cleaning solutions normally used in the United States and Canada. Trichloroethylene, employed to a limited extent in the UK and Europe, softens triacetate. 

Cleaning agent and solvent use has decreased 41% from 1986 levels, but in 1990, over 178,000 t of CFC-113 were stiH used in electronics, metal, precision, and dry cleaning (see Solvents, industrial). 

Colorless dyes of the chlorinated diphenyl ether—ureasulfonic acid type (Mitin [3567-25-7] (158)) and the (polychloro-2-chloromethylsulfonamido)-diphenyl ether type (Eulan (159)) appHed at 1—3% of the fabric weight are the most widely used during the fabrication of woolens. They cannot be removed by dry cleaning and provide protection from fabric pests over the lifetime of the product. 

DDT at 0.25—0.75% and dieldrin at 0.05% appHed during dry cleaning or by spraying fabrics with aqueous emulsions of equivalent strength were formerly used extensively as semipermanent fabric protectants. However, these are no longer used because of problems of environmental contamination. 

The main uses of petroleum naphtha fall into the general areas of solvents (diluents) for paints, etc, dry-cleaning solvents, solvents for cutback asphalt, solvents in mbber industry, and solvents for industrial extraction processes. Turpentine, the older, more conventional solvent for paints, has been almost completely replaced by the cheaper and more abundant petroleum naphtha. 

CH2CH2) 0]2P(=0)—OH are formed from polyethoxylated nonylphenol. The magnesium salts of the ester mixture are soluble in organics and are used as dry-cleaning surfactants. 

Apphcation chemists are most interested in physical and functional properties contributed by the sulfonate moiety, such as solubility, emulsification, wetting, foaming, and detersive properties. Products can be designed to meet various criteria including water solubility, water dispersibility, and oil solubility. The polar SO moiety contributes detersive properties to lube oil sulfonates and dry-cleaning sulfonates.
