Because chlorine is more electronegative than carbon, carbon tetrachloride has four polar covalent bonds. But, as pointed out earlier, the molecular symmetry cancels out the electric dipoles of the individual bonds. The result is a nonpolar molecule. Like water, carbon tetrachloride is a good solvent. At one time, it was used as a dry cleaning agent. Water and carbon tetrachloride, however, dissolve entirely different classes of compounds. Carbon tetrachloride forms solutions with nonpolar organic compounds. It is infinitely miscible, for example, with benzene, whereas water and benzene do not mix.

Good to excellent resistance to bleaches, soaps, synthetic detergents, dry-cleaning agents, sea water, and perspiration. May he soluble in some phenolic compounds. 

Since tetrachloroethene is widely used as a dry-cleaning agent, foods stored close to a source of TCE, such as a dry-cleaning operation, may be exposed to atmospheric concentrations of TCE that could then be absorbed by the food. TCE was found in butter and lard bought from shops close to dry cleaners, at concentrations up to 763 /xg/kg.67 Residues of 1,1,1-trichloroethane, chloroform and trichlorofluoromethane were also found in some samples of butter and lard, although at much lower concentrations than the TCE. 

This property is closely connected with the solubility parameters of polymer and dry-cleaning agent. Furthermore the dry-cleaning temperature should be outside a mechanical dispersion (transition) region of the polymer, since otherwise deformation may occur.
