Fabric protective

When handling large quantities of hydrogen peroxide it is necessary to wear protective goggles, overalls made of protective fabric (an apron of polyvinyl chloride), rubber gauntlets and boots, since severe burns are caused if it comes into contact with the skin. [Pg.302]

Mothballs made of naphthalene, C10H8, were once used to protect fabrics from moths. [Pg.493]

Plunkett and his assistant decided to cut open the containers. When they did, they found a white, waxy powder inside. Plunkett tested the powder. He found that it was chemically inert and heat resistant. He also found out that it had a very low surface friction. Because of this low surface friction, most things would not stick to the powder. The TFE gas in the container had polymerized to produce this new substance. The new substance s chemical name is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It was later named Teflon. Teflon is used to protect fabrics and in bakeware to prevent food from sticking to pots and pans. [Pg.83]

Textile Treating. MF resins improve the crease-resistance of cotton and cotton-synthetic blends, stiffen synthetic fabrics such as nylon, protect fabrics from mildew and aid in water repellency. [Pg.306]

Ropes, cables, coated fabrics for inflatables, architectural fabrics, and for ballistic protection fabrics. Ship to shore mooring lines are made of aramid fibers because of its resistance to saltwater corrosion. Vests made of Kevlar 29 are used by law enforcement agencies in many countries. Later we discuss this application in some detail. [Pg.103]

Several organisations around the world have developed or have proposed performance standards for UV protection fabrics. These organisations and their standards are summarised in Table 14.3. ... [Pg.162]

In the second phase of this research, a laboratory aging study was carried out on new, non-deployed vests of the same model and constmction as described above. The ballistic panels from all vests analyzed in this research consisted of 20 layers of woven PBO fabric stacked together and diagonally stitched. The ballistic panels are inserted into a sealed protective fabric liner and then into a fabric carrier system. [Pg.140]

High surface area activated carbon fibers were first prepared by direct carbonization and activation of phenolic fibers in steam/CO2 environment at temperatures around 1000°C (Economy and Lin 1976). These activated carbon flbers, manufactured in the form of a fabric, have received increased attention as adsorbents in air treatment processes. Because these fabrics are easy to handle, there is an increasing demand for them in various applications such as protective fabrics, filtration devices, odor absorbents, and for a wide range of ancillary industrial applications. The high cost of these fabrics has limited their potential use for a number of applications. High cost is also an issue for their use in military applications (Mangun et al. 1999). [Pg.205]

In case of personal protective fabrics, the bulk of ACF-based garments often results in thermal discomfort and physiological burden to the wearer. Therefore, it is necessary to create less bulky ACFs for enhanced physical comfort in chemical protective suits (Wilusz 2007). In order to achieve maximum protection and reasonable comfort, novel fabric ensembles with or without ACFs are necessary (Wilusz 2007 Gurudatt et al. 1997). An alternative approach to the use of ACFs for chemical protection is the use of functionalized selectively permeable membranes (Wilusz 2007). [Pg.208]
