The first commercial PPS process by Phillips synthesized a low molecular weight linear PPS that had modest mechanical properties. It was usehil in coatings and as a feedstock for a variety of cured injection-molding resins. The Phillips process for preparing low molecular weight linear PPS consists of a series of nucleophilic displacement reactions that have differing reactivities (26). [Pg.442]

When a parison or preform is inflated, it displaces the air around it within the mold. If no provision is made to vent the mold, compression of the air around the parison or preform can raise its temperature to such an extent that it can scorch the surface of the product. Polyetherimides (PEI) are polyimides containing sufficient ether as well as other flexibi-lizing structural units to impart melt processability by conventional techniques, such as injection molding and extrusion. The commercially available PEI (trade name Ultem) is the polymer synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution between 1,3-bis(4-nitrophthalimido) benzene and the disodium salt of bisphenol A (Eq. 2-209) [Clagett, 1986]. This is the same reaction as that used to synthesize polyethersulfones and polyetherketones (Eq. 2-206) except that nitrite ion is displaced instead of halide. Polymerization is carried out at 80-130°C in a polar solvent (NMP, DMAC). It is also possible to synthesize the same polymer by using the diamine-dianhydride reaction. Everything being equal (cost and availability of pure reactants), the nucleophilic substitution reaction is probably the preferred route due to the more moderate reaction conditions. [Pg.153]

A significant fraction, more than 25%, of the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) (Sec. 3-14a) produced by radical polymerization consists of various copolymers of ethylene. LDPE has come under increasing economic pressure in recent years because of a combination of factors [Doak, 1986]. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) has displaced LDPE in applications such as blow-molded bottles and thin films where the increased strength of HDPE is preferred over the clarity of LDPE. New producers of ethylene have entered the LDPE market because of a lack of alternatives for their feedstocks. A routine method for determining relative crystallinity based on the amorphous bands in the spectrum has proved more rapid and precise than the x-ray method. In practice, the ratio of the 778 cm-1 (12.85 ft) and 2367 cm-1 (4.22 ft) band intensities is measured. Use of a ratio eliminates the thickness measurement and increases precision to about 1% at 50% crystallinity and considerably better at higher levels. A density measurement and an infrared crystallinity determination when combined give an estimate of the fraction of microvoids which can occur in molded specimens of polytetrafluoroethylene. The density of a sample is predicted on the basis of its crystallinity as measured by the infrared method and the difference between this density and the actual density measured by displacement in water is a measure of the microvoid content. This determination is precise to about 0,2% voids by volume. By the use of confirmatory infrared measurements, it is possible to check the possibility that the presence of a substantial percentage of voids may have led to erroneous indications of the molecular weight in the standard specific gravity test discussed earlier. [Pg.476]
