Disinfection surfactants used

These are the most important class of disinfecting surfactants, used not only for antisepsis but also as active ingredients in formulas claiming to clean and disinfect in domestic use. Similar to the disinfectant dilutable cleaners, disinfectant spray cleaners are intended to both clean and disinfect. Although they are very popular with consumers, they are not used without controversy in microbiological circles [50,51]. The usual disinfectant ingredient used in these cleaners is quats (quaternary ammonium surfactants), which were discussed with the dilutable cleaners. As previously mentioned, these disinfectants are inactivated by anionic surfactants, so these formulas are usually formulated with only nonionic surfactants. 

Cationic surfactants, used for disinfection, can also serve as preservatives when formulated with nonionics. Bleaches are not useful for preservation, mainly because they are difficult to stabilize for an extended period in surfactant-based formulas.

Iodine is extensively used in a variety of forms as both an antiseptic and a disinfectant. lodophors, usually nonionic surfactants (qv) complexed with iodine, were developed for more readily usable iodine-based antiseptics and disinfectants. These are used as disinfectants in dairies, laboratories, and food processing (qv) plants, and for sanitation of dishes in restaurants. The reaction product of lanolin and iodine shows utiHty as a germicide (149). 

Surfactants which contain carboxylic acid ester or amide chains with terminal phosphonic acid groups are prepared from polyhydroxystearic acid or poly-caprolactone. Such reaction products are useful as dispersants, emulsifiers, and, in some cases, bactericides, disinfectants, and antiseptics see Sec. III.C.9 [69]. 

Cationic surfactants show a high affinity for negatively charged surfaces making them suitable for industrial applications and as components for consumer products where they are used as disinfectants, foam depressants, and first and foremost as textile softeners [23], Due to the possible formation of ion-pair associates they are usually not formulated together with anionic surfactants. 

The widespread use of cationic surfactants as detergents and disinfectants in many different home- and industrial-cleaning products suggests its likely presence in the aquatic environment, such as in surface water from WWTP. Consider using anionic and amphoteric surfactants to enhance the performance of antimicrobial agents, since they make the cell wall of microorganisms more permeable to disinfectants.
