Detergent cleaners

The removal of organics by industrial detergent cleaners. These products employ several mechanisms, depending on the formulation, but tend to include dissolution (using nonaqueous solvents such as kerosene, petroleum spirits, and naphtha, saponification, by caustic, or emulsification by nonionic detergents.

The quaternary ammonium compounds (qv) are manufactured by the reaction of an alkyl halide with a tertiary amine. The alkyl halide may be short-chain, long-chain, or benzyl. Selection of a long-chain alkyl group yields structures with variable composition and greatly adds to the chemical complexity inherent in this group. Investigation of structure-activity relationships has led to claims for superior efficacy or compatibility, most notedly with anionic surfactants in disinfectant-detergent cleaner systems, of closely related compounds in the family. 

Nonylphenol, a product of Union Carbide, Canada Ltd., consists of a mix of p-substituted monoalkyl nonypbenols, (randomly branched), with approximately 3% of the o-isomer and 4% dinonyl-phenol also represent. Apart from Dowanol, all the adjuvants mentioned contain minor variable amounts of undefined contaminants which are a function of the well head source and batch from which they were distilled (Aerotex, Cyclosol) or the method of synthesis (Atlox and nonylphenol). These chemicals and related compounds are also widely used in a wide range of household products including detergents, cleaners, shampoos, foods and other consumer and commercial products. 

These salts are employed in water treatment, baking powder (monosodium phosphate), fireproofing, detergents, cleaners, and photography. 

The washing-up howl is plastic too but the detergent you put in it belongs to another branch of the chemical industry—companies like Unilever (Britain) or Procter and Gamble (USA) which produce soap, detergent, cleaners, bleaches, polishes, and all the many essentials for the modern home. These products may be lemon and lavender scented but they too mostly come from the oil industry. Nowadays, most products of this kind tell us, after a fashion, what is in them.
