Metal degreaser

Most of the trichloroethylene produced is used for metal degreasing. Other important uses are in the scouring of wool and as an extractive solvent, e.g. for olive and soya bean oils. Minor uses are as a heat transfer medium, anaesthetic, insecticide and fumigant, paint remover and fire extinguisher.

Perchlor and trichlor are used as metal degreasing agents and as solvents in dry cleaning. Perchlor is also used as a cleaning and drying agent for electronic equipment and as a fumigant. 

Workers involved in the manufacture or use of trichloroethylene as a metal degreaser or general solvent may constitute a group at risk because of the potential for occupational exposure. Occupational exposure to trichloroethylene may also occur during its use as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyvinyl chloride (McNeill 1979).

Carbon tetrachloride is used in refrigerants in fumigants for crops in metal degreasing and in the manufacture of semiconductors. It also is used as a solvent in many industrial processes. It is an excellent solvent for organic compounds that are nonpolar or have low polarity.

The two chlorinated propene compounds shown are colorless liquids with pungent, irritating odors. Allyl chloride is an intermediate in the manufacture of allyl alcohol and other allyl compounds, including pharmaceuticals, insecticides, and thermosetting varnish and plastic resins. Dichloropropene compounds have been used as soil fumigants, as well as solvents for oil, fat, dry cleaning, and metal degreasing. 

The main uses of methylene chloride are in paint remover, aerosols, chemical processing, urethane foam blowing agents, metal degreasing, and electronics.
