The power of the airless enclosed cleaning vapor degreaser of Figure 2.30 is mighty — it is that solvent cleaning can be done in a totally inert environment (no water, no oxygen), or in a solvent-only environment, or mixed environment of inert (likely nitrogen gas) and solvent - at ambient pressure. 

Uses 1,1,1-trichloroethane was used as a solvent in numerous industrial applications such as cold and hot cleaning, vapor degreasing and in textile processing and dry cleaning. Fluorochlorohydrocarbons were made from it. The world capacity in 1984 amounted to 600 000 tonnes per year.

Solvent Gleaning. Solvent cleaning employs the natural solubilizing properties of various nonaqueous solvents or blends of solvents. Either 100% solvents or aqueous emulsions of solvents can be used. AppHcation is typically by immersion, hand appHcation, or via a vapor degreaser machine. 

Trichloroethane and other chlorinated solvents are used for vapor degreasing (84—90). Other uses include cold metal cleaning, printed ckcuit board cleaning, and as a solvent for inks, coatings, adhesives, and aerosols. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane is an excellent solvent for development of photoresist polymers used in printed ckcuit board manufacture (see Integrated circuits Photoconductivepolymers). 

Uses Organic synthesis vapor degreasing and cold cleaning solvent for fabricated metal parts textile processing aerosol propellants synthesis of fluoropolymers production of various coatings and inks may be ingredient in adhesives, cutting oils, and aerosol formulations pesticide. 

MW 131.38 CAS [79-01-6] used in dry cleaning and degreasing colorless liquid with chloroform-like odor boils at 87°C freezes at -85°C vapor pressure 58 torr at 20°C density 1.46 g/mL at 20°C very slightly soluble in water (about 1000 mg/L), miscible with organic solvents.
