Trichloroethylene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane are used in correction fluids, dry-cleaning products, degreasing sprays, and solvents and spot removers. Bromochlorodifluoro-methane is a compound found in halon fire extinguishers that is abused. Freon is used for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Anesthetics include halothane, chloroform, and the local anesthetic ethyl chloride. Methylene chloride is a component of rubber cement, paint strippers, and degreasing agents, and fluorocarbons are present in many types of aerosol sprays. 

Vapor degreasing removes soluble contamination such as oils and grease from solid surfaces that are to be subjected to electrical, chemical, or electrochemical treatment. Freons are commonly used as refrigerants and propellants in many types of aerosols. They are also used as selective solvents for degreasing.

Freon a clear liquid with a sweet smell that is manufactured and does not occur naturally. Freon is most often found as a colorless gas. It s not flammable and doesn t dissolve in water very easily. It was once used in the production of refrigeration fluid and propellants for aerosol cans, as a pesticide, as a cleaning fluid and degreasing agent, in fire extinguishers, and in spot removers. These uses have been banned since the early 1990 s and it is now only used in some industrial applications. 

The important point to be stressed is that in all cases no surface adhesion promoters were used.The only precaution taken was to ensure a good cleaning of the substrates. The final step prior to application was a vapor degreasing operation with hot freon vapors. 

Octadecyl-Triethoxysilane (Petrach or Chisso) is applied from a 1% solution in either Toluene or Freon over steel degreased in trichlorethylene. 

CFC Phaseout Requirements. The solvent selected for use in the degreasing tank operation is listed as a designated chlorofluorocarbon, the use of which was subjected to the phaseout requirements stipulated under the Clean Air Act of 1990. Since this system is still in the design phase, it is not too late to consider an alternate degreasing solvent that is not a threat to the earth s ozone layer. Aluminum in a finely divided form, as in a powder, should not be expend to a halogenated hydrocarbon.
