The conventional metal cleaning processes have been vapor degreasing, solvent immersion cleaning and cold cleaning. The solvents commonly used in these processes.

Environmental pressures like the stratospheric ozone depletion issue has forced the phasing out of certain halogenated solvents. For years, 1,1,1-trichloroethane (methyl chloroform) solvent has been a widely-used cold cleaning solvent and a popular vapor degreasing solvent. One reason why parachlorobenzotrifluoride (VOC exempt in the US) is seldom used as a vapor degreasing solvent is its high boiling point (which might damage parts). But a second, and unexpected, reason is that its heat of vaporization is quite high (Table 1.3) - approaching that of water. The latter substantially increases heater duty. 

The first eight listed solvents (green colored bad oimd) should be expected to perform similarly to a conventional vapor degreasing solvent — n-propyl bromide. Each is also prized as being priced as a commodity chemical. And the first four listed are charaaetized as being relatively non-hazardous because compliance with their exposure limits should be easily attained by emission and ventilation control.
