Kunzler et al. (5) prepared silicone hydrogels containing vinyl carbonate end-capped with fluorinated polysiloxanes that had an oxygen permeability of at least about 120 Barters, a water content of at least about 20wt%, and high modulus. 

We synthesized 138-nm diameter monodisperse colloidal particles of heptafluorobutyl methacrylate and covalently attached acylated Oil Blue N dye to these colloidal spheres. These monodisperse highly charged fluorinated colloids have the lowest refractive index (n=1.386) of any monodisperse colloid known. These fluorinated colloids self-assemble into a CCA which was polymerized within an acrylamide hydrogel. Dimethyl-sulfoxide was added to the mainly aqueous medium in order to adjust the medium refractive index to either slightly above or slightly below that of the colloidal particles. 

NMR spectra, and chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence, the five samples El to E5 are dioctahedral 2 1 layer silicates, mainly constituted of Si and Al as framework-forming elements, containing Al for Si substitutions in tetrahedral layers and fluorine for hydroxyl groups substitutions. 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy gives rise to their (Si/AI)iv tetrahedral ratio with a good reliability (Table 10-5). This paper describes the continued development of oxygen permeable silicone hydrogels based on the [-(CF2)x-H] functionalized siloxanes. A series of methacrylate functionalized fluoro-siloxy silane based monomers were synthesized. These fluorinated monomers, when copolymerized with hydrophilic monomers, such as dimethylacrylamide, resulted in transparent, low modulus hydrogels possessing high levels of oxygen permeability.
