At that time, I also joined the youth organization of Germany s semi-conservative party CDU,531 but was active only a short time, because when my university studies took me to Bonn in 1983, I abandoned all political commitments for the time being. [Pg.297]

As an anecdotal illustration, due to Francis Seiersted. I nuy cite the fact that the Nor-we n Conservative Party fn 1961 understandably had little success when in oppoi itwi they adopted the slogan that the British Conservatives and later the Danish Social Democrats successfully used in pouvr "Makegood times better."... [Pg.292]

One other important point that was mentioned earlier is that the parameters of the state of the system are not necessarily direct perceptions, such as displacement, but may be other measures such as probability. For example, if an opinion poll is taken on a sample of 1,000 people and each person is asked whether they will vote for the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, then the number of states of this system is 3 ° °. As this figure is too high to handle the state description may be replaced by just one state with three parameters of Pi. Pa. Ps. which represent the probability of the population voting Labour, Conservative or Liberal respectively. If this poll were taken many times, it would be repeatably stable in the sense now being discussed, on condition that all the opinions were in favour of either Labour, Conservative or Liberal and no other. In other words, there are repeatably only three parameters for one state. If another party were introduced, or another category such as don t knows into some of the polls and not into others, then the experiment would not be repeatedly stable. [Pg.42]

In 2009, this transfer of responsibility is exactly what the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom has announced as one of their key policies The power of Government inspectors will be drastically curbed by allowing firms to arrange their own, externally audited inspections and, providing they pass, to refuse entry to official inspectors. This policy is effectively a combination of the two approaches in transferring the inspection responsibility to a private party, envisaging that the private parties would self-police in the first instance but complement it with third-party inspections. [Pg.87]

As novel as it may seem firom the outset, this idea was not unique to the UK s Conservative Party. In 1979, the Supreme Court of Iowa in the United States put forward a similar point when deliberating on the role of municipalities in building inspections. In the event that the municipality withdrew from its inspection role, the Supreme Court noted, the void might be filled by private agencies whose certificates could be relied on by persons risking their lives and property in multiple dwelling... [Pg.87]

These dismal results signalled, at last, the end of RCC s medical accelerator program. The Conservative party once again came to power in Canada in September 1984. Brian Mulroney, the new Prime Minister, had run for office on the pledge that he would privatize crown corporations that were commercially viable and were no longer required to meet public-policy objectives. Continued losses such as those incurred by the accelerator program were unacceptable because the possibility of privatization made RCC s financial performance more important than ever before. [Pg.202]

Energy conservation will succeed if all the parties involved wish it to succeed. It only requires ill will on one person s behalf to negate all the positive efforts made. [Pg.468]

Q. Now, our Exhibit 143 is a statement by Dr. Ley. . . Reich "Organization Leader" for all the Party organizations "During the years from 1933 to 1937, everything necessary has been done in secrecy that seemed necessary to the conservation of the nation in the anticipated clash with an envious surrounding world.". . . Now when you yourself observed the constantly intensified secrecy surrounding so many of the products of the I.G.. . . did you consider that most of the projects were related to military matters ... [Pg.150]

By this means, none of the parties involved has an interest in the quantity used of a given chemical. On an environmental-political level, a better conservation and thus resulting in increased safety is to be expected. [Pg.27]

Henry Waxman, Democratic representative from California since 1975. In an unusual instance of cooperation across parties, Waxman cosponsored a bill in 1984 with conservative Republican senator Orrin Hatch called the Drug Price Competition and Patent Restoration Act. The bill helped consumers by making it easier and faster for less expensive generic drugs to get approval from the FDA. It helped drug companies by allowing their patents to be extended when the development and approval process took a particularly long time. [Pg.124]

At the next dinner party, as your host proudly serves the lobster thermidor, you may wish to momentarily stray from the conventions of a polite but conservative guest, the archetypal chemist, by casually inquiring about the arsenic content of the meal. Given arsenic s reputation as a potent poison, your host may be affronted or bemused, but he or she is sure to be interested. [Pg.147]

Naturally, such follies have a political background. At the level of the Swedish Parliament, the green block, consisting of the Environmental Party and the likewise environmentalist Center Party, exerts a substantial political influence. The Swedish Greens control a sufficient number of members of parliament that they can swing votes in favor either of the Social Democrats or the liberal/conservatives, endowing the Greens with clout out of all proportion to their numbers. [Pg.242]

Conservative sentiment in England was also seriously disturbed, at this time, by the success of the American Revolution, and still more by the development of democratic spirit and the antichurch sentiment excited by the rise and progress of the French Revolution. As Priestley had favored the cause of the American colonists, so he was sympathetic with the ideals which dominated the rise and earlier development of the French revolutionary movement. The government party in England was aroused against Priestley, especially by his caustic reply to Edmund Burke s attack on the French Revolution in 1790. As Burke had been an outspoken advocate of the cause of the American colonists before the American Revolution, Priestley,... [Pg.483]

The processes by which proteins are selected for secretion into the periplasmic space of bacteria or into the vesicles of the endoplasmic reticulum of eukaryotic cells are similar and have been discussed in Chapter 10 (pp. 519-521). However, some details are still being worked out. This is the conservative or orthodox view of the mind discussed briefly at the beginning of this book. It does not really explain what consciousness is, but, citing good evidence that physically affecting the brain alters consciousness, asks not further questions and simply believes that consciousness itself is a product of brain functioning. The consequence of this view is that for an ultimate explanation of consciousness, the phenomena of consciousness must be reduced to those of brain functioning brain functioning must be reduced to basic properties of nervous systems, which must be reduced to basic properties of live molecules, which in turn must be reduced to basic properties of molecules per se, which must be reduced to properties of atoms, which must finally be reduced to properties of subatomic parti cles. [Pg.234]

During the early 1980s, in my last three years at high school, I developed a passion for everything Bavarian the soccer team Bayern Munchen, Lederhosen, the dialect, and, of course, the Bavarian Party, the CSU,530 which exists in Bavaria only. I also became a fan of Franz-Josef StrauB, who for many decades was chairman of this party and became kind of a symbol for everything Bavarian. I surely would have joined the CSU, also because of its strong conservative views, but unfortunately this party was open only to those residing in Bavaria, where I never lived. [Pg.297]

The political repercussions of that unexpected statement were not fully appreciated by Dr Elders at the time. However, on December 9, 1994, following the Republican Party s conservative-mediated victory at the polls, Dr Elders was fired by President Clinton, ostensibly for her views on sex education, but it was undoubtedly the controversial issue of drug legalization that began her political descent. [Pg.351]
