Chronic dermatitis

For chronic dermatitis, lubricants, emollients, or moisturizers should be applied after bathing. Soap-free cleansers and colloidal oatmeal products also alleviate itching and soothe the skin. [Pg.212]

A provocation of nickel eczema after oral ingestion of nickel has been reported [401, 402], Ingestion of 2.5 mg nickel as the sulphate aggravated chronic dermatitis in 17 of 28 patients [402]. When these patients were put on a low-nickel diet, 9 of them showed improvement. [Pg.217]

Salicylic acid is used to treat various hyperkeratotic lesions like corns, warts, ring- worm, athlete s foot, chronic dermatitis etc. [Pg.453]

Toxic solvents, such as methyl alcohol, benzene, and chlorinated hydrocarbons, can penetrate the skin through cuts and abrasions. On contact, these solvents cause chronic dermatitis and allergic skin reactions in susceptible individuals. [Pg.352]

Chronic dermatitis frequently occurs among workers in BHC plants. Symptoms of acute BHC poisoning in man and experimental animals are similar. Animal pathology mimics that of DDT, and the treatment for acute BHC or DDT toxicity is essentially the same (ref. 99). [Pg.328]

Toxicity Prolonged exposure to paraffin causes chronic dermatitis, wax boils, folliculitis, comedones, melanoderma, papules, and hyperkeratoses. Studies by Hendricks et al.100 have shown carcinoma of the scrotum in workers exposed to crude petroleum wax. The carcinoma of the scrotum in workers began with a normal hyperkeratotic nevus-like lesion, which subsequently resulted in squamous cell carcinoma.101-103... [Pg.226]

Parabens can cause allergic contact dermatitis that can run an insidious course, especially when the parabens are in glucocorticoid ointments. In such cases, treatment leads to a protracted dermatitis without acute exacerbation, so that neither the patient nor the physician suspects parabens as a possible cause. A sensitization index of 0.8% was found in 273 patients with chronic dermatitis (1). [Pg.2679]

No treatment-related mortality was observed in mice administered 250-4000 mg kg marine diesel fuel by dermal application 5 day week for 13 weeks however, the 4000 mg kg dose group exhibited chronic dermatitis at the site of application. Rabbits exposed to diesel fuel no. 2 for 24 h day ... [Pg.831]

For chronic dermatitis, lubricants, emollients, or moisturizers should be applied after bathing. Soap-free (or mild) cleansers and products containing colloidal oatmeal also contribute to alleviating itch and soothing the skin. If the patient s reaction does not subside within a few days, or further spread occurs, the patient should be referred for specialist follow-up and for prescription therapy with stronger topical corticosteroids and possibly oral corticosteroid therapy. [Pg.1745]

Special caution must be taken when evaluating cutaneous lymphoid lesions, as TCR clonal rearrangements may appear in different benign inflammatory cutaneous lesions, such as chronic dermatitis and many other reactive skin lymphoid infiltrate consequently T-cell clonality cannot be taken as an absolute criterion for cutaneous lymphoma. Nevertheless benign monoclonal cutaneous lymphocytic infiltrates are more likely to develop cutaneous lymphoma than polyclonal infiltrates, which usually continue to have a benign clinical course. [Pg.197]

The effects of chromium compounds have been studied since World War II. While chromic acid mist was known to produce septal perforations in the nose, chrome holes of the skin, and chronic dermatitis, occupationally caused lung malignancies from certain chromate compounds were a newly discovered epidemiological finding. Exposure to vinyl chloride produced angiosarcoma (cancer of the liver) in workers exposed to the chemical. This wasn t discovered until an epidemiological survey revealed workers in plants that had vinyl chloride in the process had abnormally high incidences of liver cancer. [Pg.20]

Sensitivity to this vehicle is extremely rare, but has been reported in one patient who had positive reactions to all patches in the standard series, where petrolatum was used as vehicle. Patch tests with pure white and yellow soft paraffin were positive (Grimalt and Romaguera 1978). A chronic dermatitis and hyperpigmentation from petrolatum has also been reported (Maibach 1978). [Pg.353]

Eczematous skin lesions are characterized by their chronic evolution and their frequent spread, despite the topical administration of corticosteroids. They are caused, as was shown by Hjorth and Trolle-Lassen (1963), by parabens contained in corticosteroid ointments. Patch tests done with different types of parabens yielded positive responses. Local application of pure corticosteroids, without preservatives, brought about rapid healing. This type of allergy, falsely related to corticosteroids, was particularly studied by Shorr (1968) 1 % of his patients treated for chronic dermatitis suffered from this allergy. [Pg.698]

Eby and Jetton (1972) reported on an 8-year-old girl affected by a chronic dermatitis characterized by erythema, papules, excoriations and lichenification, localized on the back surface of her thighs, the cause of which was identified as the irritant contact with the glass fibers used to reinforce the plastic school chairs. [Pg.126]

Not only contact urticaria may produce dermatitis, but immediate contact reactions aggravating chronic dermatitis have been reported [2, 4, 6,12]. A previous irritant contact dermatitis produced by the working environment may predispose one not only to allergic contact dermatitis but also to immediate contact... [Pg.200]
