Chlorination of the azobenzene complex 463 with chlorine produces mono-chloroazobenzene with regeneration of PdCN. Then complex formation takes place again with the chlorinated azobenzene. By this sequence, finally tetra-chloroazobenzene (503) is obtained using a catalytic amount of PdCT. The reaction, carried out by passing chlorine gas into an aqueous dioxane solution of azobenzene and PdCf for 16 h, gives a mixture of polychlorinated azoben-zenes[455]. [Pg.93]

The performance of SCWO for waste treatment has been demonstrated (15,16). In these studies, a broad number of refractory materials such as chlorinated solvents, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and pesticides were studied as a function of process parameters (17). The success of these early studies led to pilot studies which showed that chlorinated hydrocarbons, including 1,1,1-trichloroethane /7/-T5-6y,(9-chlorotoluene [95-49-8] and hexachlorocyclohexane, could be destroyed to greater than 99.99997, 99.998, and 99.9993%, respectively. In addition, no traces of organic material could be detected in the gaseous phase, which consisted of carbon dioxide and unreacted oxygen. Cyclodienes. These are polychlorinated cycHc hydrocarbons with endomethylene-bridged stmctures, prepared by the Diels-Alder diene reaction. The development of these insecticides resulted from the discovery in 1945 of chlordane, the chlorinated adduct of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and cyclopentadiene (qv). The addition of two Cl atoms across the double bond of the ftve-membered ring forms the two isomers of chlordane [12789-03-6] or l,2,4,5,6,7,8,8-octachloro-2,3,3t ,4,7,7t -hexahydro-4,7-methano-lJT-indene, QL-trans (mp 106.5°C) and pt-tis (32) (mp 104.5°C). The p-isomerhas signiftcantiy greater insecticidal activity. Technical chlordane is an amber Hquid (bp 175°C/267 Pa, vp 1.3 mPa at 25°C) which is soluble in water to about 9 fig/L. It has rat LD qS of 335, 430 (oral) and 840, 690 (dermal) mg/kg. Technical chlordane contains about 60% of the isomers and 10—20% of heptachlor. It has been used extensively as a soil insecticide for termite control and as a household insecticide. [Pg.277]

Solvent extraction followed by gas chromatographic analysis is used to determine paraffin wax antioxidants (qv), ie, butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene and other volatile materials. Trace amounts of chlorinated organic compounds, eg, polychlorinated biphenyls, can be deterrnined by using a gas chromatograph with an electron-capture detector (22). [Pg.11]

Use of mercuric catalysts has created a serious pollution problem thereby limiting the manufacture of such acids. Other catalysts such as palladium or mthenium have been proposed (17). Nitration of anthraquinone has been studied intensively in an effort to obtain 1-nitroanthraquinone [82-34-8] suitable for the manufacture of 1-aminoanthraquinone [82-45-1]. However, the nitration proceeds so rapidly that a mixture of mono- and dinitroanthraquinone is produced. It has not been possible, economically, to separate from this mixture 1-nitroanthraquinone in a yield and purity suitable for the manufacture of 1-aminoanthraquinone. Chlorination of anthraquinone cannot be used to manufacture 1-chloroanthraquinone [82-44-0] since polychlorinated products are formed readily. Consequentiy, 1-chloroanthraquinone is manufactured by reaction of anthraquinone-l-sulfonic acid [82-49-5] with sodium chlorate and hydrochloric acid (18). [Pg.421]

TSCA also addresses the problem of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated fluorocarbons (CECs). EPA has developed regulations on the cleanup, handling, and disposal of PCBs. The manufacture and use of CECs has been banned for all but essential uses, in accordance with the Montreal Agreement, an international treaty on worldwide use of CECs. [Pg.79]

Polychlorinated Pesticides. A once substantial but now diminished use for DCPD is in the preparation of chlorinated derivatives for further use or synthesis into pesticide compounds (see Insectcontrol technology). Soil permanence and solubiUty of the products in human fatty tissues have considerably restricted the use of these compounds. The more prominent chlorinated pesticides were aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane, and heptachlor, all of which use hexachorocyclopentadiene as a starting material. Aldrin and dieldrin are no longer used in the U.S. Chlordane and heptachlor are stiU produced, but only for export use. [Pg.434]

SW-846, is used to measure emissions of semivolatile principal organic constituents. Method 0010 is designed to determine destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of POHCs from incineration systems. The method involves a modification of the EPA Method 5 sampling train and may be used to determine particulate emission rates from stationary sources.
