More than 10 000 databases exist that provide a small or large amount of data on various topics (including chemistry). The contents in databases are supplied by approximately 3500 database developers (e.g., the Chemical Abstracts Service, MDL Information Systems, etc.). Since there is a variety of topics from economics to science, as well as a variety of structures of the database, only some of the vendors (-2000) offer one or more databases as either local or as online databases (Figure 5-4) [4]. Usually, databases are provided by hosts that permit direct access to more than one database. The search occurs primarily through different individual soft-... [Pg.230]

Once the complete title is known, the journal can easily be obtained if it is in the library customarily used by the chemist. If not, one must use another library, and the next step is to find out which libraries carry the journal. CASSI answers this question too, since it carries a list of some 360 libraries in the United States and other countries, and for each journal it tells which of these libraries carries it, and furthermore, if the holdings are incomplete, which volumes of that journal are carried by each library. It may be possible to visit the closest library personally. If not, a copy of the article can usually be obtained through interlibrary loan. The CASSI also includes lists of journal publishers, sales agents, and document depositories. Photocopies of most documents cited in CA can be obtained from chemical Abstracts Document Delivery Service, Customer Services, 2540 Olentangy River Road, Columbus OH, 43210, USA. Orders for documents can be placed by mail, telephone. Telex, fax, or online through STN or other services. [Pg.1639]

The American Chemical Society maintains the chemistry.org website at http // chemistry.org/portal/Chemistry. One can access Chemical Abstracts (CAS) from this site. The site lists meetings and publications and includes a careers and jobs site and an online store. American Chemical Society (ACS) publications at http // pubs.acs.org provides its members information products and services. Currently, over 30 magazines and peer-reviewed journals are published or co-published by the Publications Division. [Pg.151]

The sharp rise in the number of papers and patent applications is evident on inspection of the citations in Chemical Abstracts. For the period from 1967, when C. A. started their online file, until 1989, a nearly exponential trend in publications is obvious (see Table I). For comparison, the ten-year period from 1957 to 1966 contains only about 80 relevant C. A. references, which is an average of eight per year. [Pg.94]

The basic ILLINET Online Network (Illinois Online Network) was used as the major computer-assisted information retrieval program. Within this network IBIS (Illinois Bibliographic Information Service), which provides abstracts taken from journal articles published from 1991 through December 1993, and CARL UnCover (Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries), which provides titles to journal articles published in 1988 through December 1993, afforded much of the current and recent information reported on here. Abstracts of the pertinent literature published from 1982 through mid-1993 were also obtained directly from CA (Chemical Abstracts). It is hoped that the overlap provided this way assures the broadest retrieval of published results. All of these sources were searched by means of the following key words ... [Pg.1123]

CAS Registry Numbers are included in the printed Chemical Abstracts chemical substance and formula indexes and in the CAS databases. The full set of CAS Chemical Registry System database information—structures, names, formulas, and ring data—is available for search and display through STN International, SciFinder, and other CAS search services. CAS Registry information is also available in CAS databases offered by other online system vendors. [Pg.254]

There has been a rapid proliferation of commercial search interfaces, such as DataStar and STN International. STN may deserve special mention since it is a science information service operated by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in North America, Fachinformationszentrum-Karlsruhe (FIZ-K) in Europe, and Japan Association for International Chemical Information (JAICI) in Japan. It is available as online subscriber access to 220 databases (STN Express) and as web access (STN on the Web for experienced searchers and STN Easy for infrequent searchers). See www.cas.org/stn. html and/or www.stn-international.de/. Since Internet search techniques depend on the interface available, no detailed explanations are given here. There are several published guides to database searches for chemical and physical properties, but the situation is evolving rapidly and it is recommended that you consult a reference librarian for information about the current situation concerning search interfaces at the library you use. [Pg.703]

STN is an online database service jointly owned by CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe. Chemical Abstracts Service provides a range of online databases covering chemistry and related sciences (see also Table 1.2) ... [Pg.9]
