Board of Certified Safety Professionals BCSP

Fortunately, the work of many others with regard to the knowledge and skill required for the practice of safety, done under the auspices of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), serves as valuable resources for the purposes of this chapter. A review of the history of that highly significant work is given here. 

Much thanks should be given to those visionaries on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Safety Engineers in the 1960s who conceived of and established the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). As a result of their work, a sound and proven certification program exists for safety professionals, for which recogifition continues to grow. The CSP—the Certified Safety Professional designation—has become the mark of the professional within the safety field. 

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is recognized as the leader in high-quality credentialing for safety, health and environmental practitioners. BCSP establishes standards for and verifies competency in professional safety practice and evaluates certificants for compliance with recertification requirements. BCSP also operates technician, technologist and supervisoty SH E certifications that provide additional career paths for safety pracffoneis. A recognition title of an individual awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) based on the individual s knowledge and experience as demonstrated to the board by the individual s application documentation and an examination based on safety fundamentals and/or comprehensive practice. Knowledge is demonstrated by educational degree accepted by the board and experience by demonstrated acceptable professional safety practice. The Certified Safety Professional Program of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) in Savoy, Illinois, is designed to recognize the qualifications and experience of safety professionals. Applicants must apply to BCSP and be approved to sit for examinations. Requirements include a college degree (bachelor s in any field or associate s in a safety-related field) and professional employment in which the primary function is safety...

Staff should be encouraged to develop personal and professional codes of conduct in the organization. Just like the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) recognizes a code of ethics and professional conduct for its manbers, likewise all staff members of an organization should be inspired to develop their own personal and professional codes of safe conduct. Their code should detail ethics and professional standards in a way that is similar to the BCSP s code.
