The health care professional typically submits this information along with an application (Snella, 1999). 

Treating addiction often requires outside help from doctors, counselor clergy and other professionals trained to advise people in trouble. Finding needed help is rarely easy, since some of the people most eager to work with drug abusers are in no way qualified to do the job. Many careers, from cosmetology to criminology to those in the medical field, require the passing of professional standardized tests. These tests lead to certification or licensing. There are other career paths that do not require certification or licensure, but holding a level of certification can be desired. To provide your child with the highest level of preparedness possible, you may want your child to take some of the standardized tests available now, or at the very least, you may incorporate some level of standardized test preparation work into your child s curriculum. 

The standards of training in science have evolved over the years, but currently an earned doctorate from a reputable university is the usual requirement for professional status in most fields. Scientists without a doctorate, however, can be recognized after publication of credible research in refereed journals. Formal certification is not common in the sciences, so recognition comes from accomplishments rather than a professional license. There are a few exceptions, such as clinical chemistry, mostly in fields closely related to medicine.
