Professional development certification requirements

The BCSP is involved in the development, coordination, implementation, administration, and maintenance of professional certification examinations to individual practitioners of various safety and health disciplines, including system safety. They offer examination sessions throughout the year at specific, approved locations across the country. The BCSP can provide additional detailed information concerning certification requirements. 

The CMBES Clinical Engineering Standards of Practice was published in 1998. These guidelines outline criteria for health care institutions on the management of medical devices, promote the professional development of its members, and outline the education and certification requirements for clinical engineers and biomedical engineering technologists and technicians.

Certification is a credential granted to pharmacists and other health professionals who have demonstrated a level of competence in a specific and relatively narrow area of practice that exceeds the minimum requirements for licensure. Certification is granted on the basis of successful completion of rigorously developed eligibility criteria that include a written examination and, in some cases, an experiential component. The certification process is undertaken and overseen by a nongovernmental body. 

In April of 1980, BCSP issued Technical Report No. 1 titled Curricula Development and Examination Study Guidelines. Ralph J. Vernon, Ph.D., CSP, was the author. That Report was issued in response to a perceived need to compile and publish data that would provide insight into the academic preparation and experience required by those who chose to attain certification as a safety professional and would take what was then a single-level BCSP examination.
