Is There a Professional Certification for Sustainability Auditors There currently is no accredited, professional certification scheme specific to sustainability auditors. In the United States, the Board of Environmental, Health and Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC)31 offers a Management Systems Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA) certification. This certification is not specific to sustainability, but does include the GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines in its exam for the Management Systems CPEA certification (BEAC, 2004).

At least in employment, the value of professional certification—the CSP designation—has achieved greater recognition. That is a form of societal sanction. There has been a continual increase in the percentage of job advertisements for safety positions that mention the desirability of being a Certified Safety Professional. 

Society for Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) hosts both an Investigator Program as well as a week-long research seminar, and also hosts a Clinical Research Professional Certification (CCRP) Prep Course and Exam for those who meet the required qualifications. 

You are (or are about to be) a professional. You need to spend some time and thought and make an assessment of the value and your options related to professional certification and or licensure. 

Take the examinations for professional certification as soon after school as you can after college. The earlier you acquire academic and certification credentials, the earlier you benefit from the additional pay. On the other hand, the longer it has been since your academic training, the more difficult the process. But it is still possible to achieve certification later in life (mine was granted by examination after the age of 60).

The BCSP is involved in the development, coordination, implementation, administration, and maintenance of professional certification examinations to individual practitioners of various safety and health disciplines, including system safety. They offer examination sessions throughout the year at specific, approved locations across the country. The BCSP can provide additional detailed information concerning certification requirements.
