Carpet protection

An important application field for stainless steel fibers is the textile sector, in which 0., i to 6% of these fibers are incorporated to endow carpets, protective clothing etc. with an antistatic finish. A further application is protection against electromagnetic pulses, interference and charging. Tungsten fibers with a diameter of 12 pm are used for boron or SiC deposition and as light bulb filaments. Furthermore, metal fibers are used in the filtration of polymer melts and corrosive liquids, as well as for electrodes with high surface areas.

This also applies, for example, to the soft PVC mats made for roller-mounted office chairs. These thick foil mats, about 1 m in size, emit plasticizers into the breathing air of the desk worker over a period of months. Since very few low-emission or emission-free products are available, the only piece of advice worth following is to tmpack the carpet protection mats and leave them exposed to the sun on the balcony for three months before using them. 

The dry soil-resistant finishing with fluorochemicals has been extended to carpet protection, which is now a rapidly growing field. 

Traditional appHcations for latices are adhesives, binders for fibers and particulate matter, protective and decorative coatings (qv), dipped goods, foam, paper coatings, backings for carpet and upholstery, modifiers for bitumens and concrete, and thread and textile modifiers. More recent appHcations include biomedical appHcations as protein immobilizers, visual detectors in immunoassays (qv), as release agents, in electronic appHcations as photoresists for circuit boards, in batteries (qv), conductive paint, copy machines, and as key components in molecular electronic devices. 

Amino resins are also often used for the cure of other resins such as alkyds and reactive acryUc polymers. These polymer systems may contain 5—50% of the amino resin and are commonly used in the flexible backings found on carpets and draperies, as well as in protective surface coatings, particularly the durable baked enamels of appHances, automobiles, etc.

A pressure pad, also used as a form of trap protection, is a flat rectangular, plastic-covered contact placed at strategic points underneath a carpet. 

Textiles, paper, and other flexible substrates such as fusible interlining, interlinking drapery and upholstered fabric, and carpets are examples of large volume applications. Another important market is with metals and other rigid materials. Included are plastics (pipes, tanks, screens, etc.) that can provide protective coatings using its variety of processing techniques. 

Plant dyes are more likely to fade when overexposed to light, so protect them accordingly. Today, the chemical dyes so widely used to color our clothes, curtains and carpets leave polluting residues. Using plant dyes instead can give beauty without damaging our delicate ecosystems. 

Your entire life is affected when one whiff of perfume, fabric softener or fresh paint can result in a throbbing headache, brain dysfunction, an asthma attack, a convulsion or a myriad of other symptoms. Work performance, relationships and community ties collapse when your olfactory system is so heightened that you become ill from the smell of laundry products on the clothes of someone sitting all the way across the room. Fear overcomes you when suddenly carpeting, photocopies, car exhaust and other products produce the same effects, and the only way to protect yourself is through isolation. 

Remove all sharp stones, roots, and anything else that might puncture the lining. Firm the sides and edges and make sure that the edges are all level. For additional protection, gently smooth a 4-in (10-cm) layer of sand all around the inside of the hole. Fay a protective underlay, such as old carpet, cardboard, or custom-made pond underlay. 

Individual collars placed around cabbage or broccoli will frequently protect them from root maggots. Cut 6-inch squares or disks of foam rabber, carpet padding or tarpaper. Punch a small hole in the middle and make a slit from the edge to the hole. Fit the barriers tightly around vulnerable plants and cover each barrier with enough earth to hold it down. 

The main applications of electroconductive fibres and textiles are for shielding effects11 and discharge purposes1213. Textile clothing acts as a Faraday cage for personnel and/or equipment that should be protected, while electroconductive carpets avoid charging of the carpet and/or the material that rubs onto it. 

Perfluoroalkyl compounds have been manufactured since the 1950s.The total production of fluorinated surfactants (anionic, cationic and neutral) was 2001 in 1979, whereas in 2000 the total production of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) alone was nearly 3000t (Shoeib et al., 2004). Together with PFOA (perfluoroocta-noic acid), PFOS is used in refrigerants, surfactants, fire retardants, stain-resistant coatings for fabrics, carpets and paper and insecticides. As with human disease vectors, so DDT succeeded initially with some of the major agricultural pests. By the early 1970s over 4 billion pounds of the insecticide had been used--approximately 80j> of it on agricultural crops. It was also in wide use for pest control in home flower and vegetable gardens, and domestically as protection against moths and carpet beetles.
