The self-adhesive tape coatings are thin and the adhesive itself does not necessarily come into contact with the valleys in the cleaned metal surface. Under these circumstances, the transmission of water vapour through the film to the metal may be possible. Moisture-transmission characteristics and other properties of p.v.c. and polyethylene tapes, as given by major manufacturers, are provided in Table 14.6.

There are many applications for polymeric waterborne adhesives. These include packaging adhesives, pressure-sensitive tape, coatings for textiles, wood adhesives, and various industrial adhesives and coatings. The potential applications for waterborne epoxy adhesives are more limited due to their lack of tack and pressure-sensitive characteristics and the time it takes for the chemical reaction to complete cure. However, waterborne epoxy systems have found significant markets in niche areas.

Use Adhesives for textiles, paper, shoes, leather, tapes coatings for metal, paper, fabrics, carpets protective (strippable) for saturating paper, felt, book covers, tape, jute pads for dipping tire cords. Can be applied by spraying, spreading, impregnation, saturation. 

Packing films, insulation adhesive tapes, coats, lining, melt-blown vessels, containers, structural products, electroinsulating seals, self-lubricating antifrictional materials. 

Special Uses. High molecular mass copolyester resins are used in the manufacture of flexible packaging. Terephthalate resins are particularly suitable as adhesion promotors for printing inks, lacquers, and adhesives on poly(ethylene terephthalate) films. Some polyester printing inks adhere directly to these sheets. Lacquers that can be heat sealed at relatively low temperature can be produced from high molecular mass, soft copolyester resins. Special linear copolyester resins are used for magnetic tape coatings [2.97]. 

Certain grades or formulations of asphalt (bitumen) and cold-applied laminate tape coatings provide a nutrient source for indigenous soil microbes. The result of this microbial degradation is not well defined, but the most likely consequence is a progressive increase of the permeability of the coating.
