Light bulb filaments

The electrical uses of mercury include its application as a seal to exclude air when tungsten light bulb filaments are manufactured. Fluorescent light tubes and mercury arc lamps that are used for street lighting and as germicidal lamps also contain mercury. 

Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is used for light bulb filaments, for cladding metals to protect them from corrosion, in making adhesives, and as a high-temperature lining for refractory furnaces.

An important application field for stainless steel fibers is the textile sector, in which 0., i to 6% of these fibers are incorporated to endow carpets, protective clothing etc. with an antistatic finish. A further application is protection against electromagnetic pulses, interference and charging. Tungsten fibers with a diameter of 12 pm are used for boron or SiC deposition and as light bulb filaments. Furthermore, metal fibers are used in the filtration of polymer melts and corrosive liquids, as well as for electrodes with high surface areas. 

Originally, reduction described the removal of oxygen from a compound. Oxide ores are reduced to metals (a very real reduction in mass). For example, tungsten for use in light bulb filaments can be prepared by reduction of trmgstenfVI) oxide with hydrogen at 1200°C ... 

OTHER COMMENTS used in control rods in water-cooled nuclear reactors used in light-bulb filaments, electrodes, special glasses, and vacuum tube getter note powder is normally handled wetted with no less than 25% of water to reduce the fire and explosion risk.

Edison s light bulb filament is the first knovm example of filamentary carbon, made in 1879. Except for early observations of filamentary carbon growth by CVO, it took another 65 years before significant further developments in carbon fiber technology occurred.
