Applications large-volume

Because of the large supply of sulfur, there is increased interest in its possible use in the construction industry (7-13). This chapter reviews research at The University of Calgary concerned with sulfur in civil engineering applications. Large volumes of materials are required for construction. The amount of sulfur which is available may be compared with the consumption of some of the principal construction materials (Table I). In Canada the annual production of sulfur is already a sizeable fraction of the yearly consumption of some of these materials. For example the annual sulfur production is about half that of raw steel and about three quarters that of portland cement. Elsewhere sulfur production is much smaller than that of presently used construction materials, but there are indications that sulfur production will be increasingly important.

Wang and Taha described an interesting application of potentiometry called batch injection. As shown in the following figure, an ion-selective electrode is placed in an inverted position in a large-volume tank, and a fixed volume of a sample or standard solution is injected toward the electrode s surface using a micropipet.

Thousands of technical papers and many books have been written on the subject of phenolic resins. The polymer is used in hundreds of diverse applications and in very large volumes. It is used worldwide. In fact the term phenolic resin encompasses a wide variety of materials based on a broad range of phenols and co-monomers. In this short article, we cannot expect complete coverage. However, nowadays this type of machine is seldom used because it is considerably more complicated and more expensive than necessary. One area of application where it is still in use is for large mouldings because a large volume of plastic can be plasticised prior to injection using the primary cylinder plunger. 

Traditionally, LC and GC are used as separate steps in the sample analysis sequence, with collection in between, and then followed by transfer. A major limitation of off-line LC-GC is that only a small aliquot of the LC fraction is injected into the GC p. (e.g. 1 - 2 p.1 from 1 ml). Therefore, increasing attention is now given to the on-line combination of LC and GC. This involves the transfer of large volumes of eluent into capillary GC. In order to achieve this, the so-called on-column interface (retention gap) or a programmed temperature vaporizor (PTV) in front of the GC column are used. Nearly all on-line LC-GC applications involve normal-phase (NP) LC, because the introduction of relatively large volumes of apolar, relatively volatile mobile phases into the GC unit is easier than for aqueous solvents. On-line LC-GC does not only increase the sensitivity but also saves time and improves precision. 

The centrifugal compressor is well established for the compression of gases and vapors. It has proven its economy and uniqueness in many applications, particularly in which large volumes are handled at medium pressures. This compressor is particularly adaptable to steam turbine or other continuous speed change drives, as the two principles of operation and control are quite compatible. It is also adaptable to the electric motor, gas engine, and gas turbine with each installation being specific to a particular problem or process. The poor solubility of coelenterazine in neutral aqueous buffer solutions often hampers the use of this compound in biological applications. The simplest way to make an aqueous solution is the dilution of a methanolic 3 mM coelenterazine with a large volume of a desired aqueous buffer solution. If the use of alcoholic solvents is not permitted, dissolve coelenterazine in a small amount of water with the help of a trace amount of 1 M NaOH or NH4OH, and then immediately dilute this solution with a desired aqueous buffer solution. However, because of the rapid oxidation of coelenterazine in alkaline solutions, it is recommended that the procedure be carried out under argon gas and as quickly as possible. 

Textiles, paper, and other flexible substrates such as fusible interlining, interlinking drapery and upholstered fabric, and carpets are examples of large volume applications. Another important market is with metals and other rigid materials. Included are plastics (pipes, tanks, screens, etc.) that can provide protective coatings using its variety of processing techniques.
