Liquids corrosive

Filtration of corrosive liquids with suction. A strongly alkaline or acid suspension is best filtered through a sintered glass funnel. Alternatively, glass wool or asbestos may be plugged into the stem of a glass funnel or supported upon a Witt plate in a glass funnel. [Pg.135]

Corrosive liquids and solids (acids, acid chlorides, etc.) are easily manipulated, and no impurities are introduced into the product from the apparatus. [Pg.207]

Benzylatnine. Warm an alcoholic suspension of 118-5 g. of finely-powdered benzyl phthalimide with 25 g. of 100 per cent, hydrazine hydrate (CAUTION corrosive liquid) a white, gelatinous precipitate is produced rapidly. Decompose the latter (when its formation appears complete) by heating with excess of hydrochloric acid on a steam bath. Collect the phthalyl hydrazide which separates by suction filtration, and wash it with a little water. Concentrate the filtrate by distillation to remove alcohol, cool, filter from the small amount of precipitated phthalyl hydrazide, render alkaline with excess of sodium hydroxide solution, and extract the liberated benzylamine with ether. Dry the ethereal solution with potassium hydroxide pellets, remove the solvent (compare Fig. //, 13, 4) on a water bath and finally distil the residue. Collect the benzylamine at 185-187° the 3ueld is 50 g. [Pg.569]

Lead is a bluish-white metal of bright luster, is very soft, highly malleable, ductile, and a poor conductor of electricity. It is very resistant to corrosion lead pipes bearing the insignia of Roman emperors, used as drains from the baths, are still in service. It is used in containers for corrosive liquids (such as sulfuric acid) and may be toughened by the addition of a small percentage of antimony or other metals. [Pg.85]

Perfluorinated carboxylic acids are corrosive liquids or solids. The acids are completely ionized in water. The acids are of commercial significance because of their unusual acid strength, chemical stabiUty, high surface activity, and salt solubiUty characteristics. The perfluoroaLkyl acids with six carbons or less are hquids the higher analogues are soHds (Table 1). [Pg.310]

Liquid-Metal Corrosion Liquid metals can also cause corrosion failures. The most damaging are liqmd metals which penetrate the metal along grain boundaries to cause catastrophic failure. Examples include mercury attack on aluminum alloys and attack of stainless steels by molten zinc or aluminum. A fairly common problem occurs when galvanized-structural-steel attachments are welded to stainless piping or eqmpment. In such cases it is mandatoty to remove the galvanizing completely from the area which will be heated above 260°C (500°F). [Pg.2419]

Whenever corrosion resistance results from the accumulation of layers of insoluble corrosion products on the metallic surface, the effect of high velocity may be either to prevent their normal formation or to remove them after they have been formed. Either effect allows corrosion to proceed unhindered. This occurs frequently in smaU-diameter tubes or pipes through which corrosive liquids may be circulated at high velocities (e.g., condenser and evaporator tubes), in the vicinity of oends in pipe hnes, and on propellers, agitators, and cen-trifiig pumps. Similar effects are associated with cavitation and impingement corrosion. [Pg.2422]

In more complex tests, provisions might be needed for continuous flow or replenishment of the corrosive liquid while simultaneously maintaining a controlled atmosphere. [Pg.2426]

In cases where bellows failure would release flammable, toxic or corrosive liquids through the vent, a short nipple and elbow should be used to direct leakage to an open funnel which is piped to grade and ties into a catch basin or manhole with a sealed inlet connection. [Pg.161]

To avoid injuries of this sort, we should use protective hoods or helmets when breaking joints on lines likely to contain corrosive liquids trapped under pressure, either because the pressure cannot be blown off through a valve or because lines may contain solid deposits. [Pg.22]

Buckets and other open-topped containers should never be used for collecting drips of flammable, toxic, or corrosive liquids or for carrying small quantities about the plant. Drips, reject samples, etc., should be collected in closed metal cans, and the caps should be fitted before the cans are moved. [Pg.147]

Chloroaluminate laboratory preparations proved to be easily extrapolated to large scale. These chloroaluminate salts are corrosive liquids in the presence of protons. When exposed to moisture, they produce hydrochloric acid, similarly to aluminium chloride. However, this can be avoided by the addition of some proton scavenger such as alkylaluminium derivatives. In Difasol technology, for example, carbon-steel reactors can be used with no corrosion problem. [Pg.278]
