The correction for the pyrolytic production of elemental carbon is accomplished by measuring the amount of elemental carbon oxidation necessary to return the filter reflectance to its initial value. This is facilitated by the three-step elemental carbon oxidation which produces a relatively slow initial rise in the reflectance. A typical output is shown in Figure 3. The pyrolysis correction corresponds to the shaded area which is added to peaks 1 and 2 to give the corrected value for organic carbon. This procedure assumes that the mass absorption coefficient of the pyrolytically produced elemental carbon is the same as that of the original elemental carbon. Research to test this assumption is continuing. [Pg.226]

Despite the amounts of Mg and Ca sources being vast, as mineral carbonation research continues to expand, then the need for a detailed worldwide evaluation of the amounts of suitable mineral deposits becomes more important [16]. A recently conducted evaluation of mineral reserves in the United States concluded that mineral resources are unlikely to be a limiting factor when industrial-scale mineral sequestration is considered [77]. It was estimated that there is enough... [Pg.366]

How much Conway appears to be out of touch with carbon (electrochemistry research is confirmed by his discussion of a 1972 paper by Thrower, presumably published in J Electroanal Chem anyone familiar with Peter Thrower s expertise—and that means any serious carbon researcher—knows that such a paper cannot (and does not ) exist. Finally, in the light of recent proposals regarding the edge chemistry of carbon surfaces [6], Conway s conclusion that [m]any porous or powder[ed] carbon materials have dangling surface bonds which are associated with free-radical behavior should also be viewed with caution (see Figure 5.4). Therefore, perhaps the most (and only ) reliable take-home message from this review is that much basic research of a substantive kind is required to relate the electrochemical behavior of various preparations more quantitatively to... The unique structure of Ceo and access to an effective method for the production of macroscopic quantities opened up a new era of carbon research compared with what was known up to that date [150,151]. The field of fullerenes is a truly interdisciplinary area which has been covered in a number of proceedings, review articles and books [152-164]. As examples of some recent... [Pg.31]

Over the last two decades, the discovery of new carbon structures in the form of closed cage molecules has demonstrated that carbon science is alive and well and is a productive font for the synthesis of new materials. Advancements in new and more conventional areas of carbon research and development continue at a very fast pace. Now and in the future, there are perhaps more opportunities than ever before for the development of new materials consisting of carbon or containing one or multiple carbon structures. [Pg.3]

In the preface to their landmark monograph. Mattson and Mark 61 wrote Carbon researchers have, for the most part, considered the surface chemistry of activated carbon to be in such a state of disarray that they want to avoid lengthy discussions of surface phenomena. More than two decades later, with vast improvements in our knowledge of the role of surface chemistry in carbon gasification [37,6181 and in the use of carbons as catalyst supports [22], it is argued here that this is no longer true. [Pg.313]

Interesting results in the field of surface manipulation (Figure 7.4) can also be envisaged to arise from the arrangement of nanotubes, fullerenes, or tiny diamond particles on surfaces or from the direct addressing of certain positions on carbon structures. The analytical laboratory on a chip, nanotube-based catalysts, highly efficient fuel cells or a luminous display with low power consumption illustrate the enormous potential of carbon research. [Pg.454]

A major part of the work on XPS studies on carbon has been carried out using carbon fibers and graphites because of their easy manipulation, although a few investigations have also been reported on carbon blacks, chars, and activated carbons. It is felt, however, that with the availability of the technique at different centers of carbon research, more and more work will be carried out on the analysis of surface groups on activated carbons using the technique. [Pg.33]

This anniversary volume contains four chapters on a wide range of chemical and physical aspects of carbon science and technology. With it, as with its 29 predecessors, we want to illustrate the breadth and depth of knowledge required from carbon researchers for mastery of their subject. In today s age of emphasis on teamwork and networking, there is no question that carbon research is the ultimate example of both mM/tidisciplinarity and mterdisciplinarity. [Pg.253]
