In 1981, two eminent British cancer experts. Sir Richard Doll and Richard Peto published a paper in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute entitled The causes of cancer Quantitative estimates of avoidable risks of cancer in the United States today. The authors drew upon a vast body of literature of the type mentioned above, and attempted to allocate the deaths caused by cancers among various responsible factors. The authors concluded that a certain percentage of human cancer deaths could be avoided if exposure to the responsible factors could be eliminated or controlled in some way, although the appropriate degree and nature of control for some of the lifestyle factors, especially diet, is still highly uncertain. The Doll and Peto estimates are presented in Table 5.2. The factors are listed in a somewhat different order from how they were listed by the original authors, because of our interest in clearly separating lifestyle factors (the first... [Pg.145]

The editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) commented on an article that showed that plasma DDE levels in breast cancer patients from several states in this country were not significantly different from levels in control patients.48 Similar results have been reported in other studies,49 and my final comments pointed out that it is incumbent on scientists, the media, legislators, and regulators to distinguish between scientific evidence and hypothesis, and not to allow a paparazzi science approach to these problems. The editors received several negative reactions to my article and these included complaints that I had not disclosed my financial interests. [Pg.123]

Surprisingly, studies show pain caused by cancer or other terminal disease is often undertreated. Even though the World Health Organization has shown that more than 90% of such pain can be effectively controlled with good pain management, patients who need relief the most are often among those least likely to receive it. In a 1998 study published in the Journal of... [Pg.399]

The study s researchers, who reported their results in the British Journal of Cancer in 2003, performed what is known as a case-control study. They examined the dietary intake of acrylamide among 987 cancer patients and compared it to that of 538 healthy people to see if they could find a link between the disease and the chemical. No such link was apparent — the cancer patients had consumed no more acrylamide than had the healthy subjects. In fact, they associated higher levels of... [Pg.23]

An important question that needs to be answered is whether an adult patient with a solid malignant tumor that has not been controlled by other treatments should, as the last resort, receive chemotherapy or ascorbate. A valuable summary of current opinion of the use of chemotherapy in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine (9 November 1978) by Moertel. He pointed out that two decades ago... [Pg.632]
