In 1981, two eminent British cancer experts. Sir Richard Doll and Richard Peto published a paper in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute entitled The causes of cancer Quantitative estimates of avoidable risks of cancer in the United States today. The authors drew upon a vast body of literature of the type mentioned above, and attempted to allocate the deaths caused by cancers among various responsible factors. The authors concluded that a certain percentage of human cancer deaths could be avoided if exposure to the responsible factors could be eliminated or controlled in some way, although the appropriate degree and nature of control for some of the lifestyle factors, especially diet, is still highly uncertain. The Doll and Peto estimates are presented in Table 5.2. The factors are listed in a somewhat different order from how they were listed by the original authors, because of our interest in clearly separating lifestyle factors (the first... [Pg.145]

A 1954 pnblication in the British Journal of Cancer by Peter Armitage and Richard Doll" (whom we mentioned a few pages back) entitled The age distribntion of cancer and a multi-stage theory of carcinogenesis can be seen as a seminal event in the evolution of onr understanding of the way in which cancers develop. Although there have been a nnmber of snccessfnl modifications and refinements of the Armitage-Doll model in the 50 years since its publication, it is still seen as broadly correct. [Pg.149]

Perhaps the first modern analytical studies were those reported in the 1950s on the relationship between smoking and lung cancer. Richard Doll (he appears again ) and Bradford Hill, of England, were the authors of cohort studies of smokers, and Ernst Wynder and Evarts Graham, of the United States, undertook and reported case-control studies of lung cancer cases. The Doll-Hill studies are, in their... [Pg.171]

The best break we have had with cancer has come from epidemiology. Concerned with rising British mortality from lung cancer, the Medical Research Council, in 1947, commissioned Austin Bradford Hill (1897-1991) and Richard Doll (1912-) to analyse the possible causes. Their meticulous statistical survey (published in 1951) of patients from twenty London hospitals showed that smoking is a factor, and an important factor, in the production of cancer of the lung. ... [Pg.502]

Although Fisher s legacy is of immense importance to medical statisticians, except indirectly through his work on genetics, he had little to do with medical statistics. One notorious exception is his criticism of Richard Doll and Bradford Hill s work on smoking and lung cancer. [Pg.20]
