Camphor liniment

Poisoning has occured through the accidental administration of camphor liniment to young children by mistake for castor oil. The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, colic disturbed vision, delirium, mental confusion and epileptic convulsions. Recovery is the rule. But in rare cases death may occur from respiratory failure (126-128).

Camphorated Oil. This is a camphor liniment. The proportions are the eame as in the preceding formula, substituting oHvo oil for the alcohol, and exposing the materials to a moderate heat. As an external stimulant application it is even more powerful than the spints aud to obtain its full infio-ence, the part treated should bo also covered with flannel and oil silk. It forms a v oluablc liniuieut in chronic rheumatism, and other painful affections, aud is specially valuable as a connter-irritant in sore or inflamed throats, and diseased bowels. 

Compound Camphor Liniment, or Essence for Headache. Take of camphor, 24 ounces avoinlupois oil of lavender. 

One of camphor s most serious disadvantages as a medicinal product is that it is poisonous. Drinking straight camphorated oil can kill a person. In smaller doses, it can cause mental confusion, irritability, jerky movements of the arms and legs, neuromuscular hyperactivity, and seizures. Symptoms can appear between five and ninety minutes after swallowing the camphor. In 1980, the United States Food and Drug Administration limited the amount of camphor allowed in consumer products to 11 percent. It also banned products that contain concentrated camphor, such as camphorated oil and camphorated liniment. 

Based on the erroneous notion that mental illness and seizure disorders were antagonistic, psychiatrists induced seizures as a treatment for depression and other psychiatric problems. Convulsive therapy was first described clinically by Ladislas J. Meduna. In 1934, he injected camphor liniment to induce seizures in patients with schizophrenia, some of whom actually improved. His technique was recognized immediately for its therapeutic value and adopted worldwide within a few years of its introduction. Other chemicals, such as metronidazole (Metrozol), were administered under the mistaken hehef that such treatments would consistently reheve the symptoms of mental illness. Pharmaco-convulsive therapy frightened patients and was fiuught with shortcomings, such as the unreliable induction of seizures. 

Place approximately 5 ml of camphor liniment in a dried and weighed 120-ml Erlenmeyer flask and weigh accurately. Connect the flask with a U-shaped drying tube, place the flask and tube in an air-oven, maintained at 110°, and pass a steady stream of carbon dioxide through the U-tube into the flask for two hours. The orifice of the gas delivery tube should be about 15 mm above the surface of the liniment. Remove the flask, blow out the remaining carbon dioxide with dry air, cool the flask in a desiccator and weigh. The loss in weight is not less than 19 per cent and not more than 21 per cent of the camphor liniment taken for the assay. 

To apply their method to ammoniated liniment of camphor, liniment of soap, and liniment of turpentine, Mital and Gaind found a previous steam distillation was necessary and the following method may be used. 

Monoterpenes, 10-carbon-containing terpenoids, are composed of two isoprene units, and found abundantly in plants, e.g. (+)-limonene from lemon oil, and (—)-linalool from rose oil. Many monoterpenes are the constituents of plant volatile oils or essential oils. These compounds are particularly important as flavouring agents in pharmaceutical, confectionery and perfume products. However, a number of monoterpenes show various types of bioactivity and are used in medicinal preparations. For example, camphor is used in liniments against rheumatic pain, menthol is used in ointments and liniments as a remedy against itching, bitter-orange peel is used as an aromatic bitter tonic and as a remedy for poor appetite and thymol and carvacrol are used in bactericidal preparations.

It has been used as a mild expectorant and relieves gripping. Applied externally, camphor acts as a rubefacient and mild analgesic and is employed in liniments as a counter-irritant in fibrositis, neuralgia and similar conditions. Camphor has been administered as a solution in oil by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection as a circulatory and respiratory stimulant, but there is little evidence of its value for this purpose (121-125). 

Mital and Gaind (155) claim good recoveries for camphor in pharmaceutical preparations with a volumetric method in which hydroxylamine hydrochloride is used. For spirit, liniment and solution of camphor in turpentine, the following procedure is applicable ... 

Aldehydes aid ketones often have pleasant odors. They are found as components of many perfumes and flavorings, both natural and artificial. For example, citral has a strong lemon odor and is found in lemon and orange oils, cinnamaldehyde has a strong cinnamon odor and is found in cinnamon oil, and vanillin is a major component of vanilla flavoring. Camphor, isolated from the camphor tree, is used in liniments and inhalants, and muscone, which has a musky aroma, is used in many perfumes.

Thero has been some difficulty in preparing this liniment a.s directed in the dispensatory, on account of its coagulating. The following formula makes a tincture which remains fluid at all temperatures. Take 4 ounces castilo soap, 2 ounces camphor, i ounco oil of rosemary, 16 ounces water, and 20 ounces 95 per cent, alcohol,... 

Hungarian Counter-Irritant Liniment. Macerate for. a week 1 droebm powdered canthorides, 1 drachm sliced garlic, 4 drachms each camphor, braised mustaid seed, and black pepper, in 6 fluid ounces strong vinegar and 12 fluid (pudccs rectified spirit then filter. 

Liniment for Wounds. In 1 quart alcohol dissolve 1 ounce each saltpetre and gum camphor, and 1 table-spoonful of salt. When dissolved the liniment is ready for use. aud is a magical remedy. 

Compound Chloroform Liniment. This is c( mposcd of 1 ounce each chloroform, ether, spint of camphor, and laudanum, and i ounce tincture of cayenne pepper. For rheumatic pains. 

Petroleum Liniment. Mix together I onm ij pecroleum, 4 ounce camphor, and 4 drachm alcohol. 

ChBblain Liniment. Take 1 ounce of camphorated spirit, 4 ounce of the liquor of snbacetate of lead. Mix and apply 3 or 4 times a day. This is Sir Astley Cooper s prescription, and a very eflicacious remedy for cbilblmns. 

Hheumatic Liniment. Tincture of cayenne, oil of turpentine, olive oil, hemlock oil, gam camphor, sassafras oil, tincture of pricldy ash, of each 1 ounce powdered capsioam , or caycune, 1 ounce spirit of wine,... 

Liniment for Old Bheumatic Pains. A powerful liniment for old rheumatic pains, especially when affecting the loins, is the following Camphorated oil and spirits of turpentine, of each 2 parts water of ammonia, 1 part laudanum, I part to bo well shaken together. 

Cajeput Liniment. Mix together 7 ounce.s soap liiumeut (see jVo. 4869), i ounce camphor, and 1 ouuce oil of cajeput. 

Compound ]tfustard Liniment, Take t f )il of mustanl. 1 fluid drachm ethereal e.N.tract of mezereon, 40 grains camphor, 120 grains castor-oil, 5 fluid drachms alcohol, 4 fluid ounces dissolve tho extract of mezereon ami camphor in the alcohol, and add the oil of mustard and castor-oil. 

Melt together 4 ounces oil of mace and 4 ounces beef nmrrow. DiSvSolvo in 4 drachms alcohol, 2 drachms each oil of rosemary and balsam of tolu, and 1 drachm each cf camphor and oil of cloves. Mix all together. A good liniment iu rheumatism. 

Stiflf Keck, Occasionally an attack is severe, and confinement to the bouse or bed, with wrapping up of tho neck with cotton-wadding or flannel, together with attention to the stato of the digestive powers, is necessary, Tho diet in these cases must bo regulated, "and an aperient, such as the lenitive electuary (see No, 5154), or castor oil, taken if required by the state of the bowels. If the stiffness bo obstinate in its duration, it had better be rubbed with camphorated oil, or some other appropriate liniment. 

Dissolve the camphor in the spirit, shake the olive oil with the solution of ammonia, and mix the whole together, so as to form a liniment.
