Perucka (1996) studied ethephon-induced changes in the accumulation of carotenoids in the red pepper fruit. Ethephon application stimulated fruit maturation. The mass of ripe fruits from the second and third harvests was increased by an average of > 44% with ethephon application. Treated fruits from the third harvest had higher concentrations of capsanthin (11% on average), (3-carotene (14%) and (3-cryptoxanthin-provitamin A (18%) than control fruits. The increase in these pigments was accompanied by a decrease in the amount of zeaxanthin and the disappearance of neoxanthin. [Pg.266]

It is well established that 18 2 and 18 3 are the precursors of and C, aldehydes and alcohols by exogenous application of 18 2 or 18 3 and radiolabelled precursors, e.g. [93]. As for the hexyl and hexenyl esters, it is not clear if hexyl or hexenyl moieties of esters solely originate from C, aldehydes or alcohols. Incubation of apple fruits with hexanal or hexanol resulted in an increase in the formation of hexyl esters, e.g. [94], but increased levels of these esters at the ripe stage of apple fruits were much larger than the endogenous levels of aldehydes and alcohols [97]. Interestingly, methyl jasmonate application stimulated ester formation of the pre-climacteric apples, but had no effect on the ester formation of the post-climacteric fruits [17] however, it inhibited the hexyl ester formation in apples stored in a controlled atmosphere [96]. Fan et al. [17] speculated that the inhibitory effect found in the last report was owing to the toxic level of methyl jasmonate used. [Pg.162]

Meanwhile, a very important, new use for acetylene had been developed, oxy-acetylene welding and cutting. The oxy-acetylene became popular because it gave a temperature of 6,000 to 7,000° F. contrasted with 4,000, the maximum attainable with the oxy-hydrogen flame. This application stimulated the invention of a safe method of compression acetylene to facilitate its storage and shipment. The challenge was met by the Prest-O-Lite Company, who devised a method involving the compression of acetylene to 300 p.s.i. into a cylinder packed with a solid absorbent saturated with. acetone. [Pg.527]

However, in recent years the trend has been turning towards developing much smaller fields, making use of the existing field infrastructure. This, in combination with advances in subsea completion technology and the introduction of new production equipment has further stimulated the application of subsea technology. [Pg.268]

This chapter and the two that follow are introduced at this time to illustrate some of the many extensive areas in which there are important applications of surface chemistry. Friction and lubrication as topics properly deserve mention in a textbook on surface chemistiy, partly because these subjects do involve surfaces directly and partly because many aspects of lubrication depend on the properties of surface films. The subject of adhesion is treated briefly in this chapter mainly because it, too, depends greatly on the behavior of surface films at a solid interface and also because friction and adhesion have some interrelations. Studies of the interaction between two solid surfaces, with or without an intervening liquid phase, have been stimulated in recent years by the development of equipment capable of the direct measurement of the forces between macroscopic bodies. [Pg.431]

New metliods appear regularly. The principal challenges to the ingenuity of the spectroscopist are availability of appropriate radiation sources, absorption or distortion of the radiation by the windows and other components of the high-pressure cells, and small samples. Lasers and synchrotron radiation sources are especially valuable, and use of beryllium gaskets for diamond-anvil cells will open new applications. Impulse-stimulated Brillouin [75], coherent anti-Stokes Raman [76, 77], picosecond kinetics of shocked materials [78], visible circular and x-ray magnetic circular dicliroism [79, 80] and x-ray emission [72] are but a few recent spectroscopic developments in static and dynamic high-pressure research. [Pg.1961]

Besides being useful precursors to pyrroles pyridine-2-ones -4-ones, -4-thiones. and -4-imines 4-alkylidene-dihydropyridines thiophenes 1,2,4-triazoles thiapyrane-2-thiones, isoquinoline-3-ones isoben-zothiophenes and 4-mercaptoimidazolium hydroxide inner salts, mesoionic thiazoles are potentially useful in the construction of molecules with herbicidic (39). central nerve stimulating, and antiinflammatory properties (40,41). Application in dye synthesis has likewise been reported (42). [Pg.15]

The remarks of this and the last section are only a small fraction of what might be said about these important materials. We have commented on some aspects of the polymerization processes and of the polymers themselves that have a direct bearing on the concepts discussed here and elsewhere in this volume. This material provides an excellent example of the symbiosis between theoretical and application-oriented points of view. Each stimulates and reinforces the other with new challenges, although it must be conceded that many industrial processes reach a fairly high degree of empirical refinement before the conceptual basis is quantitatively developed. [Pg.309]

The search for substances which quahfy for proposed applications has always been a driving force for the synthesis and characterization of new compounds. This is especially true in polymer chemistry, where it is the potential of polymers as engineering materials that often stimulates research. Polymeric materials frequently fail to be serviceable in engineering applications for one of the following reasons ... [Pg.334]

Tetracycline antibiotics have found wide application in animal industries for treatment, preventive maintenance and stimulation of growth of large horned livestock owing to what their residue amounts can be present at milk and meat of animals. Residue amounts of antibiotics are not toxic, however, capable to cause allergic reactions and to promote development of tolerance of the some people pathogenic bacterias. According with the legislative requirements of a number of the European countries it is forbidden to deliver to the population production polluted residual contents of tetracyclines. [Pg.357]

The most common ions observed as a result of electron-stimulated desorption are atomic (e. g., H, 0, E ), but molecular ions such as OH", CO", H20, and 02" can also be found in significant quantities after adsorption of H2O, CO, CO2, etc. Substrate metallic ions have never been observed, which means that ESD is not applicable to surface compositional analysis of solid materials. The most important application of ESD in the angularly resolved form ESDIAD is in determining the structure and mode of adsorption of adsorbed species. This is because the ejection of positive ions in ESD is not isotropic. Instead the ions are desorbed along specific directions only, characterized by the orientation of the molecular bonds that are broken by electron excitation. [Pg.177]

The Snoek pendulum, which in the most general sense is a device to measure relaxations, has also been used to measure relaxation caused by tangential displacements at grain boundaries. This application has been the central concern of a distinguished Chinese physicist, Tingsui Ke, for all of the past 55 years. He was stimulated to this study by Clarence Zener, in 1945, and pursued the approach, first in Chicago and then in China. This exceptional fidelity to a powerful quantitative technique was recognised by a medal and an invitation to deliver an overview lecture in America, recently published shortly before his death (Ke 1999). [Pg.195]

Acetylene was discovered in 1836 by Edmund Davy and characterized by the French chemist R E. M. Berthelot in 1862. It did not command much attention until its large-scale preparation from calcium car bide in the last decade of the nineteenth century stimulated interest in industrial applications. In the first stage of that synthesis, limestone and coke, a material rich in elemental carbon obtained from coal, are heated in an electric furnace to form calcium carbide. [Pg.363]
